Self-Massage for Menstrual Disorders: An Adjuvant Treatment Approach

    Menstrual disorders, also known as menstrual irregularities, are common gynecological diseases. They are characterized by abnormal menstrual cycle or bleeding, as well as abdominal pain and systemic symptoms before and during menstruation. The causes may be organic lesions or functional disorders. Many systemic diseases such as blood diseases, hypertension, liver diseases, endocrine diseases, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, reproductive tract infections, and tumors can cause menstrual disorders. Self-massage can play a certain role in the adjuvant treatment of menstrual disorders and can be done before and after sleep during the days around menstruation.

 

    1. Preparation

 

    Lie flat on the bed, close your eyes slightly, breathe evenly, overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand, and gently place your right palm on your lower abdomen. Lie still for 1-3 minutes.

 

    2. Circular massage of lower abdomen

 

    Overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand, and place your right palm on your lower abdomen. Use appropriate force to massage in a clockwise and counterclockwise circular motion for 1-3 minutes until the skin feels warm.

 

    Effect: Tonifies Qi, strengthens Yang, and promotes the communication between the heart and kidneys.

 

    3. Circular massage around the navel

 

    Overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand, and place your right palm below the navel. Use appropriate force to massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction for 1-3 minutes until the abdomen feels warm.

 

    Effect: Warms the meridians, dispels cold, and regulates Qi and blood.

 

    4. Rub and press Guanyuan point

 

    Half clench your right fist, extend your thumb, and place the thumb pad on the Guanyuan point. Rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute.

 

    Effect: Nourishes the liver and kidneys, regulates menstruation, and relieves pain.

 

    5. Rub and rub the lower back

 

    Place your palms on both sides of the lower back and rub and rub with force from top to bottom for 0.5-1 minute, until the lower back feels warm.

 

    Effect: Strengthens the waist and kidneys, activates blood circulation, and opens the meridians.

 

    6. Rub and press Shenshu point

 

    Cross your hands on your waist, place your thumb on the Shenshu point on the same side, and the other four fingers on the waist. Rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute.

 

    Effect: Warms and tonifies the kidney yang, strengthens the waist and bones.

 

    7. Press and rub Zusanli point

 

    Place the pad of your middle finger on the Zusanli point on the same side, and press and rub with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute. Alternate between the two lower limbs.

 

    Effect: Tonifies the spleen, strengthens the stomach, and harmonizes Qi and blood.

 

    8. Rub and press Xuehai point

 

    Place your palms on the Xuehai point on the same side, and rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute. Alternate between the two lower limbs.

 

    Effect: Activates blood circulation, dispels stasis, unblocks the meridians, and relieves pain.

 

    Massage should be stopped during menstruation. Pay attention to menstrual hygiene and avoid sexual intercourse, sitting baths, swimming, etc. Ensure adequate sleep and maintain a positive mood.
