Massage Techniques for Menstrual Disorders: A Natural Approach for Relief and Regulation

Menstrual disorders, also known as menstrual irregularities, are common gynecological diseases. They are characterized by abnormal menstrual cycles or bleeding volume, as well as abdominal pain and systemic symptoms before or during menstruation. The causes may be organic lesions or functional disorders. Many systemic diseases such as blood diseases, hypertension, liver diseases, endocrine diseases, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, hydatidiform mole, reproductive tract infections, and tumors can cause menstrual disorders. Self-massage can be used as an adjuvant treatment for menstrual disorders and can be performed before and after sleep for a few days before and after menstruation.

1. Preparation

Lie on the bed with your eyes slightly closed, breathe evenly, overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand, and gently place the palm of your right hand on your lower abdomen. Lie still for 1-3 minutes.

2. Massage the lower abdomen

Overlap the palm of your left hand on the back of your right hand, and place the palm of your right hand on your lower abdomen. Apply clockwise and counterclockwise circular motions with appropriate force for 1-3 minutes, until the skin feels warm.

Effect: Tonifies qi and strengthens yang, regulates the heart and kidneys.

3. Massage around the navel

Overlap the palms of your hands on the back of your right hand, and place the palm of your right hand below the navel. Apply clockwise circular motions around the navel with appropriate force for 1-3 minutes, until the abdomen feels warm.

Effect: Warms the meridians, disperses cold, regulates qi and blood.

4. Rub and press the Guanyuan point

Half clench your right hand, extend your thumb, and place the thumb pad on the Guanyuan point. Rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute.

Effect: Nourishes the liver and kidneys, regulates menstruation, and relieves pain.

5. Rub and friction the lumbosacral region

Place the palms of your hands on both sides of the lumbosacral region and rub and friction the region from top to bottom for 0.5-1 minute, until the waist feels warm.

Effect: Strengthens the waist and kidneys, activates blood circulation and opens the collaterals.

6. Rub and press the Shenshu points

Cross your hands on your waist, place your thumb on the Shenshu points on the same side, and the other four fingers on the waist. Rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute.

Effect: Warms and tonifies the kidney yang, strengthens the waist and bones.

7. Rub and press the Zusanli points

Overlap your index finger and middle finger of one hand, place the fingertip of the middle finger on the Zusanli point on the same side, and rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute. Alternate between the lower limbs.

Effect: Tonifies the spleen, invigorates the stomach, and harmonizes qi and blood.

8. Palm rub the Xuehai points

Place the palms of your hands on the Xuehai points on the same side, and rub and press with appropriate force for 0.5-1 minute. Alternate between the lower limbs.

Effect: Activates blood circulation, dispels stasis, promotes blood flow, and relieves pain.

Massage should be stopped during menstruation. Pay attention to menstrual hygiene and avoid sexual activity, sitting baths, swimming, etc. Ensure adequate sleep and maintain a positive mental state.
