Navigating Menarche: Strengthening Physical and Mental Health Care for Girls

February 20, 2024

Menarche is the most obvious sign of a girl entering puberty. For girls experiencing menarche, they may feel nervous, scared, shy, and curious about the first occurrence of menstruation. They may also experience physical discomfort such as bloating, abdominal pain, backache, fatigue, sleepiness, and facial swelling. In addition to the pressure of studying, their resistance and adaptability may be reduced to varying degrees.

Therefore, it is very important to strengthen physical and mental health care and counseling for girls experiencing menarche.

Firstly, parents and teachers should teach girls about the physiology and psychology of puberty, so that they understand that menarche is a natural part of physical development and a sign of entering adolescence. They should not worry excessively. They should also prepare them mentally for the discomforts that may accompany menarche, such as backache, sleepiness, fatigue, and weakness, to avoid panic and increase psychological burden.

Secondly, girls should avoid participating in vigorous sports, long-distance cycling, and running during menstruation to prevent excessive fatigue, which may lead to weakened resistance and the onset of diseases such as colds.

Thirdly, they should regularly clean the external genitals during menstruation and avoid masturbation. Because the body's resistance is weakened during this stage, if hygiene is not taken into account, it can easily lead to bacterial infections and fever. According to statistics, the incidence of vulvar pruritus in girls experiencing menarche is about 6.9%, and the main contributing factors are related to poor hygiene during menstruation and masturbation.

Fourthly, they should enhance self-protection by using high-quality sanitary pads. They should never use inferior products for the sake of cheapness, nor should they use poorly disinfected regular toilet paper or grass paper as substitutes.

Fifthly, they should pay attention to rest, ensure an adequate amount of sleep, and consume nutritious and easily digestible meals. This is beneficial for enhancing physical fitness and restoring energy.

Sixthly, they should avoid contact with cold water and pay attention to keeping warm. It is best to avoid activities like swimming.
