Iron Supplementation: Essential for Adolescent Girls' Health and Well-being

November 28, 2023

Iron is one of the essential trace elements for human health and is an important raw material for the synthesis of hemoglobin. Iron deficiency can reduce the content and physiological activity of hemoglobin, resulting in a decrease in oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood, which affects the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the brain.

During adolescence, girls undergo significant changes in both body and mind. Not only does their physical form undergo rapid growth, but various organs within the body also develop rapidly. Along with the development of adolescence, the demand for various nutrients greatly increases. The body urgently needs to replenish more iron to meet the needs of vigorous metabolism. Menstruation in girls also causes iron loss, and the relative content of iron in food is insufficient. Therefore, girls generally have varying degrees of iron deficiency. Scientific research has shown that the daily iron requirement for adolescents is 18 milligrams, and menstruating women need to supplement 2.2-2.3 milligrams of iron daily to compensate for iron loss during menstruation. Foreign studies have shown that supplementation of iron syrup for 2 months in 16-17-year-old female students with low levels of iron in the blood. Before iron supplementation, most girls experience mood swings, lack of concentration, weakness, and fatigue. After iron supplementation, the level of iron in the blood returns to normal, and fatigue, exhaustion, and other symptoms disappear.

Adolescent girls should pay attention to iron supplementation:

1. The most common and convenient method is to supplement iron through diet. Eat more foods rich in iron, such as animal liver, kidney, blood, lean meat, eggs, seafood like fish, shrimp, seaweed, kelp, jellyfish, soybean products, red dates, black fungus, etc.

2. Use an iron pot for cooking, which can increase the iron content in food by 10-19 times. At the same time, when the iron pot is at a high temperature, the inorganic iron micro-flakes on the surface of the pot are easily absorbed by the body due to the seasoning and stirring of the spatula and spoon.

3. Eat a diverse diet, avoid being picky eaters, and avoid blind dieting.

4. For girls with obvious iron deficiency, iron supplements should be taken under the guidance of a doctor, such as ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate, artificial blood supplements, etc.
