Enhancing Intestinal Peristalsis: Traditional Chinese Medicine, Diet, and Exercise

February 26, 2024

Overweight individuals with spleen and stomach disharmony type generally do not like to exercise and feel weak and want to lie down after meals. This slow intestinal peristalsis can lead to symptoms of indigestion. So how can we enhance their intestinal peristalsis?

1: Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupressure Method

Place both thumbs against the chest, and the other four fingers against the armpits. Apply pressure to lift and hold the chest muscles, lift and relax, and move from the inside to the outside, repeating 3 times.

Use both thumbs to push from the midline of the body, the midpoint between the two nipples, to the bilateral midpoints of the breasts, and continue to push outward along the intercostal spaces until reaching the sides of the chest. Then move down one intercostal space and push outward from the midline of the chest to the intercostal space on the sides of the chest, continuing in this manner.

Push from the midline of the abdomen to the sides, pushing from the upper abdomen to the lower abdomen in sequence, repeating 3 times.

Knead the abdomen with both hands. Start from one side of the abdomen and move to the other side, kneading the upper and lower abdomen once each. When kneading, use both hands to lift a piece of abdominal muscle (skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscle), gently lift it for a moment, release and move it forward, then lift another piece of muscle, relax and repeat, repeating 3 times.

Massage the abdomen with the palms of the hands, starting from the center of the abdomen and massaging in a clockwise direction, gradually moving from the inside to the outside, doing 30-50 times. Then, in a counterclockwise direction, rotate from the outside to the inside 30-50 times.

2: Diet to Promote Intestinal Peristalsis

1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain rich organic acids such as malic acid, citric acid, and formic acid, which can protect vitamin C and increase the utilization rate of vitamins during processing and cooking. Tomatoes also contain a special ingredient called lycopene, which helps digestion and diuresis and can assist gastric juice in digesting fat. Lycopene can also inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, and can treat angular cheilitis.

2. Chicken gizzard

Also known as chicken inner gold, it is the inner wall of the chicken stomach. Chicken gizzards contain gastric hormones and digestive enzymes, which can increase the secretion of gastric juice and gastric acid and promote gastric peristalsis. Gastric hormones are easily destroyed by high heat, so it is best to eat them raw.

3. Yogurt

Yogurt contains all the nutrients of milk, and its outstanding feature is its rich lactic acid content, which can decompose lactose in milk into lactic acid. For people who lack lactase in the gastrointestinal tract or are prone to diarrhea after drinking fresh milk, they can switch to drinking yogurt. Lactic acid can inhibit the growth of mold in the body and prevent bacterial imbalance caused by the use of antibiotic drugs. Lactic acid can also prevent the accumulation of toxins produced by the decomposition of proteins by spoilage bacteria, thus having an anticancer effect. Yogurt has a mild laxative effect and can prevent constipation in the elderly.

3: Balanced Diet + Moderate Exercise

A good weight loss method must meet multiple requirements: it must be effective in weight loss, avoid rebounding, and have no adverse effects on the body. The most important thing is a balanced diet + moderate exercise to maximize the effectiveness of slimming.

Instead of exercise, this method is more like breathing. Most people breathe in the chest area. If you adjust your breathing to the abdomen, it can help solve constipation, fecal impaction, and intestinal peristalsis, stabilize the mind, and be very beneficial to health. Breathing for 10-30 minutes before bedtime every day is good.

In winter, it is not suitable for intense exercise as it may lead to catching a cold. You can choose slightly milder exercises such as walking, jogging, cycling, yoga, and gymnastics. As long as you ensure enough exercise time, you can achieve the effect of burning fat and losing weight.
