Combat Dry Skin: Effective Tips for Winter Hydration

February 22, 2024

Winter weather is cold and dry, and during this time, our skin suffers the most and tends to become dry and flaky. It is important to focus on moisturizing and hydrating the skin. So, do you know what to do when your skin is dry?

One: Increase the amount of toner

Increasing the amount of toner is not about "hydrating" the skin excessively, as the water-holding capacity of the stratum corneum is limited, and excessive application cannot be fully absorbed and will evaporate with the air. The purpose of increasing the amount of toner is to hydrate the stratum corneum cells as much as possible, enhancing the skin's ability to absorb subsequent skincare products. When using toner, it is best to wet the cotton pad thoroughly with toner and gently pat it onto every inch of the skin, maintaining the process for about 2-3 minutes.

Two: Add some plant oils to your moisturizer

What to do if the moisturizing power of your moisturizer is not enough? Try adding some natural plant oils such as shea butter oil, rosehip oil, and olive oil to your moisturizer. Take an amount of moisturizer about the size of two 1-cent coins, add 2-3 drops of plant oil, gently rub it between your palms to warm it up, and then gently apply and press it onto the skin.

Three: Use skincare products with "improved moisturizing" ingredients

Compared to surface moisturizing ingredients such as high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and mineral oil, ingredients such as ceramides and niacinamide can improve the skin's own moisturizing ability and strengthen the skin barrier, helping the skin better resist the damage caused by dry environments, and locking in the moisture and surface sebum in the cells.

Four: Use sleeping masks every morning/evening

The strong moisturizing effect of sleeping masks is due to the presence of many large molecule water-locking ingredients, such as collagen and hyaluronic acid. Generally, although sleeping masks are recommended for use at night, they do not contain photosensitive ingredients, so they can also be used during the day. Therefore, if your skin is dry and you don't mind a slight stickiness, you can use a sleeping mask as the last step in your daytime skincare routine to enhance moisturization.

Five: SOS skin humidification method

If your skin suddenly feels dry and tight during the day, you can use a mist toner containing moisturizing ingredients, gently pat it onto the skin, and then lightly apply some moisturizing essence or facial oil to the excessively dry areas, such as the sides of the nose and cheeks.

Six: 1+1 to keep the skin moisturized even after applying makeup

If you feel that your makeup base products, such as BB cream or foundation, are not moisturizing enough during winter, there's no need to rush to change products. You can try the 1+1 method to instantly enhance the moisturizing and hydrating effect of your makeup base. Add 1-2 pumps of moisturizing essence or serum to your foundation, and it will become more emollient, providing a more adherent makeup effect.
