Taking Care of Yourself During Menstruation: What to Eat and What to Avoid

February 16, 2024

Period is the most vulnerable time for women, and during this period, the first thing to learn is to take care of yourself. How to protect yourself? Let's start with your daily diet!

What to eat during menstruation

(1) Women with deficiency of qi and blood are prone to irregular menstruation, such as irregular menstrual cycles and dysmenorrhea.

In daily diet, we should pay attention to increasing nutrition, such as dates, milk, eggs, longan, soybeans, apples, etc., which can replenish deficient qi and blood. Chinese herbs like danggui and shengdi can also be used to make soup for nourishing qi and blood.

(2) Develop good habits in life and eat more vegetables and fruits.

Eat less spicy food; women with irregular menstruation should avoid spicy food during menstruation, as it can worsen the symptoms of menstrual irregularities.

(3) Women with light menstrual flow can eat more iron-rich foods. Adequate intake of iron can prevent iron-deficiency anemia.

For example, you can eat more black beans, sea cucumbers, and other nourishing foods.

Animal liver, black sesame, green leafy vegetables also contain a large amount of iron.

However, it is not recommended to consume blood-nourishing soups like black chicken soup and danggui red dates soup during menstruation. It is best to consume them 2-3 days after menstruation ends.

What to pay attention to during menstruation

1. Do not take cold showers.

During summer, having your period can be very uncomfortable.

Taking a cold shower on a hot summer day may seem very refreshing, but it is not advisable during menstruation.

Taking a cold shower can cause irregular menstruation, leading to increased or decreased menstrual flow.

After taking a cold shower, you may experience abdominal pain, so taking a cold shower is not recommended.

2. Do not eat spicy food.

Although spicy food is enjoyable, it is better to have a light diet during menstruation.

You should not indulge in spicy food because your body is in a special period.

3. Intense exercise can cause problems with bowel movements, so avoid running or playing badminton.

You can take a leisurely walk or go for a gentle stroll, which is fine.
