Supernumerary breasts are generally believed to be caused by incomplete regression of the mammary primordia. In addition, improper bra-wearing, lymphatic obstruction in the armpit, or obesity can also lead to supernumerary breasts. Let's take a closer look at the causes of supernumerary breasts.
Congenital developmental abnormalities
During the sixth week of embryonic development, when the embryo is just over 1 centimeter long, the cells on the ventral side of the trunk thicken and form ridge-like structures, equivalent to an arc connecting the armpit to the groin. These two ridge-like protrusions are called milk lines, which contain many mammary primordia. Apart from a pair in the front chest that continues to develop, the remaining mammary primordia generally regress gradually after the ninth week of embryonic development. If regression is incomplete before birth, supernumerary breasts will form after birth, medically referred to as supernumerary breasts.
Improper bra-wearing
Prolonged wearing of ill-fitting bras or overly tight clothing can exert pressure on the breasts. For example, wearing tight, pointed tops or wearing small, poorly supportive bras can easily push the breast fat outward and cause supernumerary breasts.
Lymphatic obstruction in the armpit
More than 90% of supernumerary breasts are caused by lymphatic obstruction in the armpit. The metabolic waste products of the breast cannot be excreted in a timely manner, leading to accumulation in the armpit and the formation of supernumerary breasts.
Obesity-induced
Obesity is not the fundamental cause of supernumerary breasts, but it can make the breast fat more abundant and the appearance more obvious. Therefore, if you want to get rid of supernumerary breasts, it is necessary to control weight appropriately.
How to prevent the formation of supernumerary breasts
It is difficult to intervene in supernumerary breasts caused by congenital developmental abnormalities, but some women may develop supernumerary breasts due to improper bra-wearing or poor lymphatic circulation. Therefore, the following two methods can reduce the likelihood of supernumerary breasts:
1. Regularly massage the armpits to promote local blood circulation;
2. Choose a suitable bra and avoid wearing overly tight bras, especially during adolescence.
