Balancing Diet in Autumn: Reducing Spiciness, Increasing Acidity

The principle of dietary supplementation during the beginning of autumn is to reduce spiciness and increase acidity.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is believed that the element Metal restrains Wood, meaning that excessive Lung Qi can harm the Liver. Therefore, in autumn, it is important to "increase acidity" in order to enhance the functions of the Liver and resist excessive Lung Qi.

Eating less spicy food is recommended because the Lung belongs to the Metal element, and its Qi is strongest during autumn. After the beginning of autumn, it is not recommended to consume excessive amounts of watermelon or muskmelon, as they can harm the Yang Qi of the Spleen and Stomach. It is important to remember that "autumn melons spoil the stomach." Traditional Chinese medicine experts also recommend eating porridge every morning during autumn. As the ancients believed: "Eating porridge in the morning helps to eliminate impurities, invigorate the Spleen and Stomach, produce body fluids, and make people feel refreshed throughout the day. It is a nourishing practice."
