The Impact of Alcohol Consumption During Menstruation: A Closer Look at Women's Liver Health

February 19, 2024

Before menstruation, the duration of intoxication is prolonged, which is also a forbidden period for the liver. When it comes to drinking alcohol, women are twice as likely as men to develop liver damage and alcohol poisoning, meaning women are more susceptible to the harmful effects of alcohol.

Basically, women have fewer enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, so their ability to break down acetaldehyde is weaker. In addition, the secretion of alcohol-degrading enzymes decreases due to the influence of female hormones before menstruation. As a result, the rate of alcohol breakdown slows down, leading to the accumulation of acidic substances instead of being excreted. To neutralize these substances, the liver has to continuously produce enzymes, increasing the likelihood of liver dysfunction.

Before menstruation, the activity of alcohol-degrading enzymes is reduced, and the ability to metabolize alcohol decreases. If metabolism slows down, the duration of intoxication will be prolonged and the feeling of drunkenness will be more severe. Therefore, drinking alcohol before menstruation can easily lead to addiction and become a trigger for alcohol poisoning.

Therefore, self-care should be implemented at the most fundamental level, and women should also consider their menstrual cycle when drinking alcohol.

So, can alcohol be consumed during menstruation? Will it affect menstrual blood secretion? Doctors tell us that the maximum amount of menstrual blood secretion is only 50-120g, and alcohol does not have much impact on this.

In addition, many women have a strong desire to drink wine or warm alcohol during menstruation. This is also because the body temperature drops by 0.3-0.4 degrees during menstruation, and subconsciously, they want to warm up their bodies. Therefore, during this period, it is appropriate to drink 1-2 glasses of wine, but not more.

As women, we should protect ourselves during menstruation, no matter how much we enjoy drinking alcohol.
