Which Women Should Not Take Ejiao

According to traditional Chinese medicine experts, women with yang deficiency should not take Ejiao. After taking Ejiao, they may experience loss of appetite, bloating in the stomach, and digestive disorders. In addition, Ejiao should be avoided when suffering from cold, cough, diarrhea, or during menstruation. It can be resumed after recovery or when menstruation stops.

In our traditional concept, Ejiao, along with ginseng and deer antler, is regarded as the "three treasures of tonics" in traditional Chinese medicine. Many people believe that Ejiao has the function of "treating diseases and strengthening the body". However, excessive use of Ejiao can also have side effects, such as causing indigestion and excessive internal heat.

Traditional Chinese medicine experts point out that although Ejiao is good, it is not suitable for some women. For example:

【Which Women Should Not Take Ejiao】

  1. People with excessive internal heat, such as heart heat, liver heat, lung heat, or even yin deficiency with heat. If only Ejiao is used, there may be a situation where deficiency cannot be replenished and the internal heat will become worse.

  2. People with excessive dampness in the body: Symptoms may include dry and bitter mouth, sticky mouth, fatigue, dizziness or confusion, bloating, poor bowel movements, and the most important sign is a thick and greasy tongue coating, either white or yellow.

  3. People with wounds should not take Ejiao immediately. Ejiao promotes blood circulation, so if there are wounds, it should not be taken until the wounds have scabbed, otherwise the wounds will not heal properly.

  4. People with blood stasis in the body: They may have dull skin color, pigmentation, easy bruising, dull lips, a dull or bruised tongue, purplish or thickened veins under the tongue, and a tight pulse. Women often have irregular menstruation, usually delayed, with blood clots, abdominal pain, and dark color, and the duration of menstruation is short, etc.

  5. People with spleen deficiency, that is, people with poor digestion, mainly manifested as poor appetite, loose or dry stools, fatigue, and sallow complexion. Although there is no specific rule that people with spleen deficiency cannot take Ejiao, the sticky texture of Ejiao can hinder the function of the spleen and stomach, especially for patients with spleen deficiency and stagnation, who have poor appetite and bloating. If they must take Ejiao, they need to combine it with qi-regulating and digestion-aiding drugs to counteract its greasy nature.
