Understanding Urinary Tract Infections in Women: Causes, Classifications, and Health Impacts

January 17, 2024

Urinary tract infection is a common disease, mostly seen in women. Urinary tract infection is a common condition in women during hot weather. Clinically, it is divided into non-specific urethritis, gonococcal urethritis, acute urethritis, and chronic urethritis. If you experience symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and pain during urination, sometimes accompanied by lower back pain and lower abdominal distension, you may have urinary tract infection.

I. Reasons why women are prone to urinary tract infection:

1. When the urethral opening or urethra in women is obstructed, such as urethral stricture, urinary tract stones, tumors, etc., it can lead to poor urine drainage, allowing bacteria to grow in the urethra and causing urinary tract infection.

2. The female urethra is shorter, about 3-4 cm, and the urethral opening is adjacent to the vaginal opening and anus, making it more susceptible to contamination from vaginal secretions and feces. Especially when women have bacterial vaginosis, it is more likely to be accompanied by bacterial urethritis.

3. Urinary tract injuries caused by various reasons often easily lead to urinary tract infection, including sexual intercourse, improper use of instruments during gynecological examinations, and other external injuries.

II. There are four classifications of urinary tract infection in women: gonococcal urethritis, non-gonococcal urethritis, fungal urethritis, and trichomonal urethritis.

III. The harm of urinary tract infection to women's health and daily life:

1. Causes various discomfort symptoms: After the pathogen infects the urethra, it can cause abscesses on the urethra. The resulting scars can narrow the urethra, making it difficult for patients to urinate and resulting in a weak urine stream. In addition, increased secretions, itching in the external genitalia, and other symptoms make many women feel embarrassed.

2. The harm of urinary tract infection includes causing arthritis: When the infection is severe, bacteria can invade the knee joint and cause arthritis.

3. Can cause infertility: The prostate gland may be invaded, resulting in prostatitis. Patients may experience perineal pain and lower back pain, which can lead to infertility in severe cases.

4. Affects offspring: Children born to infected women may develop conjunctivitis.
