Qi Deficiency: Understanding Weakness and Its Impact on Women

January 11, 2024

After running or doing some physical activity, women often say, "I feel weak." What exactly is weakness? In fact, Western medicine does not have the concept of "qi," only traditional Chinese medicine theory mentions it. "Qi deficiency" refers to the decline in the function of tissues and organs. Its main symptoms are physical weakness and easy fatigue.

In traditional Chinese medicine, qi deficiency is a disease in which the structure of tissues and organs is normal but they cannot function properly. Although our bones, muscles, and nerves are normal, their function is weakened due to qi deficiency, which leads to symptoms of weakness.

Qi deficiency is more common in women because women are generally less active and engage in less physical activity than men. Especially in today's society, most women work in offices and spend the whole day sitting in front of a computer, which makes them more prone to qi deficiency. Qi deficiency is a common condition among urban women.

Women with qi deficiency often speak softly and have shallow breaths. They may cough frequently. People who speak unclearly or speak faster are also prone to qi deficiency. This is similar to the principle of coughing - those with qi deficiency cannot sustain speaking until the last word. Therefore, their speech becomes faster and faster. If qi deficiency affects normal speech, it indicates a severe stage where the qi in the body has been depleted. Typically, patients with qi deficiency have a yellowish complexion, easily get tired, sweat a lot, feel cold, feel hot, and are prone to colds in winter and heat stroke in summer.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the spleen and stomach are considered as a whole. The spleen governs transportation and transformation, and the stomach is responsible for receiving and digesting food. They work together to digest and absorb nutrients to nourish the body. If the spleen fails to ascend, the stomach will not descend. Weakness in the spleen and stomach generally manifests as indigestion after eating too much or eating hard food, feeling drowsy, palpitations, headaches, and other symptoms after meals. The weaker the spleen, the more severe these symptoms become. Usually, these symptoms do not threaten life, so many people do not pay attention to them. In fact, these are manifestations of qi deficiency.

Feeling cold and hot, being intolerant to cold or heat, is mainly due to the lack of a good "isolation zone" between the spleen and the body, which affects digestion.

With long-term spleen deficiency, the function of the gastrointestinal tract will also be impaired, and the digestion and transportation of food will be hindered. Over time, qi and blood will become insufficient, leading to low blood pressure. This is because with spleen deficiency, it cannot transport essential substances to various tissues and organs in the body, and the supply to the brain will also be hindered.

Throughout history, we have seen delicate women taking small steps, panting softly, and speaking softly. In fact, if these "ladylike characteristics" are intentionally made, it's fine. But if they are naturally like this, it indicates spleen weakness. The qi in various tissues of the body is insufficient, so everything becomes "slow motion."

The voice becomes softer, the strength of eating, defecating, and walking becomes weaker, and even the strength of breathing is almost gone. Even if these women are elegant and charming, they are not worthy of envy. Only they themselves know that this is a pathological state, a state of weakness where they cannot exert vigorous vitality.

Therefore, fragile women should also strengthen their spleen by exercising moderately every day. They should eat foods and herbs that have the effect of tonifying the spleen or receive acupuncture massage. With persistence, I believe that "fragile beauties" can become "healthy beauties."

Moreover, women with spleen deficiency are prone to facial aging. They may have been admired as "beautiful and elegant ladies" a few years ago, but now they have become "thin and haggard women." How can they accept this? Therefore, even if women do not want to improve their fragility and think that it "does not affect the overall situation," they should still tonify their spleen in order to maintain their appearance.
