Choosing the Right Toner for Acne-Prone Skin: Tips for Shrinking Pores and Reducing Oiliness

December 28, 2023

Acne-prone skin is usually accompanied by oily and enlarged pores. Using toners that contain alcohol, astringents, lemon water, or fruit acids can effectively shrink pores and temporarily reduce skin oiliness. If you are allergic to alcohol, you can choose an alcohol-free, refreshing, and anti-inflammatory toner. Before using toner, make sure your skin is clean to avoid worsening acne symptoms.

1. Choosing the Right Toner

1. Moisturizing Toner

Moisturizing toners contain moisturizers, as well as a small amount of fragrance, colorants, surfactants, preservatives, and alcohol. More than 90% of toners on the market belong to this category.

2. Exfoliating Toner

Exfoliating toners are used to remove dead skin cells. They usually contain ingredients like fruit acids and salicylic acid. They are best used with cotton pads to effectively remove excess dead skin cells and make the skin appear smoother and more delicate.

3. Firming Toner

Firming toners are mainly used for their astringent properties. They usually contain astringents and alcohol, which help congeal the keratin protein near the pores, control oil, and shrink pores. Some products also include anti-aging ingredients to make the skin appear firmer and more elastic.

4. Balancing Toner

Balancing toners can adjust the skin's pH balance and oil-water balance, moisturize the stratum corneum, and evenly distribute the skin's sebum. They are easily absorbed and have a secondary cleansing effect.

2. Correct Moisturizing Method

1. Use a cotton pad to apply an appropriate amount of toner suitable for acne-prone skin. Gently press and pat it onto the face to help the skin absorb it evenly, balance the water and oil levels, and shrink pores. Remember to use toner after cleansing.

2. Take an appropriate amount of moisturizing lotion with good hydrating effects and apply it to the forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose using circular motions. Avoid using creams or similar moisturizing products that contain oily moisturizers to prevent blocking the pores and worsening acne symptoms.

3. When applying the moisturizer, be careful to avoid inflamed areas of acne, as it may worsen the inflammation.
