Less Menstrual Flow: Causes, Concerns, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedies

December 27, 2023

Menstrual flow is less, which means that the menstrual cycle is generally normal. However, the amount of blood flow is significantly reduced, even to the point of being intermittent or sporadic. Or the entire menstrual period is shortened to less than two days, which is considered as "less menstrual flow". If this condition occurs in women during adolescence and reproductive age, it may develop into amenorrhea. If it occurs in menopausal women, it often leads to entering menopause. Therefore, having less menstrual flow should not be ignored.

In simpler terms, the main reason for having less menstrual flow is low estrogen levels or underdeveloped reproductive organs. Estrogen stimulates the thickening and proliferation of the endometrium in the reproductive organs, preparing for conception. In the absence of pregnancy, the proliferated endometrium sheds and bleeds, resulting in menstruation. If a woman's menstrual bleeding is scarce, it is likely that the low estrogen level in the body has led to insufficient proliferation of the endometrium in the reproductive organs. This condition can affect a woman's future fertility and reduce the chances of conception. Therefore, having less menstrual flow is not a trivial matter and should be taken seriously.

As a symptom of menstrual disorders, having less menstrual flow has long been valued in traditional Chinese medicine. Among them, Chinese motherwort and angelica sinensis are considered "holy medicines" for nourishing blood, regulating menstrual flow, and improving less menstrual flow.
