Understanding the Causes of Acne: Hormones, Keratosis, and More

December 24, 2023

"Acne" is a skin condition that severely affects the appearance of the face, and its impact on appearance is not limited to the duration of the disease. It may also cause lifelong regret due to the scars it leaves behind. Looking at the causes, it can generally be divided into the following categories:

1. Hormones: Some women may have oily skin during adulthood, mostly due to their sebaceous glands being more susceptible to absorbing and stimulating the secretion of male hormones.

2. Follicular keratosis: The upper part of a normal hair follicle has a thin layer of keratin, which is easily shed, ensuring that the hair follicle is unblocked and sebum can flow smoothly. Conversely, if the keratin layer becomes thicker and does not shed easily, the sebum that has not had time to flow out will block the hair follicle and form a blackhead. Excessive bacteria in sebum can block the capillaries, and an environment with low oxygen and high sebum content is conducive to bacterial reproduction, leading to inflammation, especially during periods of stress or before menstruation, when temporary acne may occur.

3. Medications: Inappropriate contraceptives and certain antibiotics may disrupt the hormonal balance system, leading to excessive sebum secretion.

4. Endocrine imbalance: Endocrine imbalance leads to excessive sebum secretion, which cannot be discharged and blocks the hair follicles, creating a prerequisite for acne formation. The sebaceous glands of the skin have a receptor for male hormones, and some people have very sensitive receptors. Therefore, any slight changes in hormone secretion will affect sebum secretion. Some women may find that acne appears before or after their menstrual cycle, or when they are under stress or lack of sleep.

5. Diet: Overeating, undigested food accumulating in the body, poor digestion and excretion of waste toxins, as well as a preference for high-sugar drinks, fried foods, and seafood, can all contribute to acne formation.

6. Lack of sleep: Lack of sleep can cause metabolic imbalances and change the skin from a healthy weakly acidic state to an alkaline state, losing its bactericidal function.

7. Climate: The secretion of subcutaneous fat naturally increases with the increase in external temperature. Therefore, combination skin in winter can become oily skin in summer.

8. Inappropriate skincare products: More oily skincare products are suitable for dry skin. On the contrary, they can block the hair follicles, making it difficult for sebum to be excreted.

9. During puberty: During adolescence, there is a sudden increase in male hormones, excessive development of sebaceous glands, and severe follicular keratosis, which hinders the smooth discharge of sebum and causes acne.

10. Ultraviolet radiation: Certain high sun protection factor products, after being irradiated by the sun, the molecules of the sunscreen easily penetrate the skin, thereby blocking the pores and affecting the normal secretion of sebum, increasing the chance of acne formation. In this case, the first step is to thoroughly clean the skin and use ozone steam to fully open the pores, and then remove the blackheads embedded in the pores one by one.

11. Nervous system: Excessive tension or anxiety can stimulate the production of kidney adrenaline. Kidney adrenaline itself can promote the normal growth of male hormones, thereby stimulating the secretion of sebum.
