December 24, 2023

During menstruation, women should avoid eating raw and cold food, washing their face with cold water, and taking cold medicine. There are many restrictions. I want to say that some traditional Chinese medicine should also be avoided during this period, otherwise it will lead to abnormal menstruation. So what are the taboos for taking traditional Chinese medicine during menstruation? Let's find out together!

Can women take traditional Chinese medicine during menstruation?

It is well known that women are very weak during their menstrual period, so there are many things to pay attention to, especially in the use of medication.

If medication is used improperly during menstruation, it may cause menstrual disorders, and in severe cases, amenorrhea may occur.

Of course, not all traditional Chinese medicines are prohibited during menstruation. It depends on what they are used for. Therefore, women can still take traditional Chinese medicine during menstruation, but it depends on the situation.

Three types of traditional Chinese medicine that should not be taken during menstruation

  1. Blood-activating or warm-tonifying traditional Chinese medicine

For traditional Chinese medicines that have blood-activating or warm-tonifying effects, such as peach kernel, safflower, salvia, chuanxiong, and cinnamon, if you take them during menstruation.

It will cause excessive menstrual flow, decrease in blood volume throughout the body, anemia, and changes in menstrual cycle, either shorter or longer.

  2. Heat-clearing or bitter-cold-purging traditional Chinese medicine

For traditional Chinese medicines such as coptis root, phellodendron bark, rhubarb, anemarrhena, and gypsum, if you take them during menstruation, it may cause amenorrhea, abdominal pain, and even uterine cold!

  3. Astringing or hemostatic traditional Chinese medicine

During menstruation, blood-activating traditional Chinese medicine should not be taken, and hemostatic traditional Chinese medicine should not be taken even more. If taken indiscriminately, it may cause poor blood circulation and dysmenorrhea!

Astringing and blood-activating traditional Chinese medicines include: schisandra, rosa roxburghii, madder, cryptomeria japonica leaf, and epimedium.

Recommended foods for women during menstruation

  1. Lamb

Many women will have acne breakouts on their faces during their periods. This is because the zinc content in women's bodies during menstruation is much higher than usual, which hinders normal physiological metabolism and causes acne breakouts. Supplementing zinc can alleviate this phenomenon.

  2. Beef

Beef is also a common food on our dining table. Therefore, we can effectively relieve the symptoms by eating beef during menstruation.

Because women may have a little insomnia during their menstrual period, beef can also improve sleep quality.

  3. Pumpkin

Women are prone to acne during their menstrual period, so when this problem occurs, we can eat pumpkin to effectively reduce skin oiliness.

  4. Spinach

Some women may experience discomfort or breast pain during their periods.

Spinach is rich in vitamin E, which can reduce the production of prostaglandins, which is a substance that can cause a series of premenstrual pain.

Eating spinach can effectively supplement vitamin E and help relieve pain.
