Understanding the Causes of Women's Lower Back Pain: A Gynecological Perspective

December 14, 2023

Women's lower back pain is a common gynecological condition due to their physiological characteristics such as menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. It is also associated with gynecological conditions like leukorrhea, menstrual disorders, gynecological diseases, pregnancy-related conditions, and contraception. Studies have shown that more than 80% of women who have given birth experience lower back pain, especially during menstruation, pregnancy, and postpartum. These types of pain are often considered to be physiological and do not require specific treatment.

The following gynecological conditions can easily cause lower back pain:

1. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Women who suffer from pelvic inflammatory diseases such as chronic adnexitis, pelvic peritonitis, uterosacral ligament or connective tissue inflammation may experience lower back pain due to the inflammation.

2. Uterine Prolapse

When the uterus descends along the vagina, it can cause a feeling of heaviness and lower back pain due to weakened pelvic support tissues and increased intra-abdominal pressure.

3. Cervicitis

Inflammation of the cervix can cause symptoms such as increased vaginal discharge, local itching, and pain. The inflammation can also lead to lower back pain.

4. Pelvic Tumors

Pelvic tumors such as uterine fibroids, cervical cancer, and ovarian cysts can cause lower back pain by compressing nerves or infiltrating pelvic connective tissues. The intensity of pain may increase as the tumor grows.

5. Abnormal Uterine Position

The normal position of the uterus is anteverted and anteflexed. If the uterus becomes retroflexed, the abnormal position change can cause lower back pain due to excessive traction on the uterine ligaments and compression of some nerves.

6. Pregnancy

During pregnancy, as the fetus grows month by month, the support on the lower back increases. Prolonged mechanical pressure can cause ligament relaxation and compression of pelvic nerves and blood vessels, leading to lower back pain.

7. Reproductive Factors

Factors such as multiple pregnancies, multiple abortions, or excessive frequency of sexual activity can lead to kidney qi deficiency, which can in turn induce lower back pain.
