The Impact of High Heels on Teenage Girls' Health: Pelvic Narrowing and Foot Deformities

December 5, 2023

Young women wearing high heels shift their center of gravity forward, straighten their chests and abdomen, appearing strong, light, and graceful. However, not every young woman is suitable for wearing high heels, especially girls in their teenage years before the age of 20.

Teenage girls in the stage of puberty have more cartilage in their bone structure, with a higher water and organic content and fewer inorganic salts. Their bones are soft and easily deformed. Wearing high heels at an early age can cause changes in the pelvic and foot morphology.

The pelvis is a bone ring formed by the combination of the sacrum, coccyx, left and right hip bones, ligaments, and joints. This bone ring usually starts to form at the age of 7 and is basically formed by the age of 25. The pelvis is an important structure for transmitting the weight of the human body. When wearing flat shoes, the weight of the whole body is borne by the entire foot; when wearing high heels, the weight of the whole body mainly falls on the sole, which disrupts the normal load-bearing line of gravity, increases the load on the pelvis, and easily causes pelvic narrowing, leading to difficulties in childbirth in adulthood.

In addition, wearing high heels can also cause unnoticed displacement of the pelvis, affecting the normal fusion of the bone ring and leading to pelvic deformities. The development and maturity of foot bones is around 15-16 years old. The size of the shoes directly affects the growth of foot bones.

Wearing high heels at an early age can cause foot bones to ossify according to the angle of high heels, leading to deformities of the metatarsophalangeal joints, fractures of the metatarsal bones, and other foot diseases. These diseases can cause foot pain and, in severe cases, can affect walking and activities. Therefore, teenage girls should not wear high heels, especially those with heels of 7-8 centimeters. From a biomechanical perspective, it is advisable to wear shoes with a slope or heels not exceeding 3 centimeters on a regular basis.
