Dietary Therapy and Care for Pediatric Pneumonia: A Guide for Parents

Dietary therapy for pediatric pneumonia

1. Fritillary Bulb Congee: First, cook 100g of glutinous rice with a suitable amount of sugar to make congee. When the congee is ready, add 5-10g of powdered Fritillary Bulb and simmer for a few minutes. Serve warm in the morning and afternoon. This is used for coughing and difficulty in expectorating sticky phlegm.

2. Bamboo Juice Congee: Cook 50g of glutinous rice to make congee. When the congee is almost ready, add 50-100ml of bamboo juice and simmer for a while. Serve warm in the morning and evening or in the afternoon. This is used for expectorating purulent phlegm or when there is slight mental confusion.

3. Perilla Seed Congee: Mash 15-20g of Perilla Seeds into a paste, boil them in water to extract a concentrated juice, remove the residue, add 50-100g of glutinous rice, and an appropriate amount of rock sugar to make congee. Serve warm in the morning and evening. This is used for coughing and wheezing.

4. Garlic Congee: Peel 30g of purple-skinned garlic, boil it in boiling water for 10 minutes, then remove it. Next, put 100g of glutinous rice into the garlic water and cook it into a thin congee. Finally, put the garlic back into the congee and simmer for a moment. Serve warm in the morning and evening. This is used for fungal infection in pneumonia.

5. Ginkgo and Reed Rhizome with Rock Sugar: Remove the shells and skins from 20 Ginkgo nuts, crush them, and put them together with 30g of reed rhizome in a clay pot. Add 2 bowls of water and simmer until there is 1 bowl remaining. Remove the residue and add 15g of rock sugar. Stir until dissolved and drink. This is used for coughing, expectorating phlegm, and wheezing.

6. Lily Sweet Soup: Take 60-100g of lily and add an appropriate amount of sugar. Simmer in water and drink.

7. Tuckahoe Pear Stewed Pig Lungs: Take 10g of Tuckahoe, 2 pears (peeled and diced), and 250g of pig lungs. Remove the foam from the pig lungs and put them together with Tuckahoe in a clay pot. Add a little rock sugar and enough water. Simmer over low heat for 3 hours and then consume. This is used for Yin deficiency with phlegm and heat.

8. Chinese Yam Congee: Take 45-60g of dried Chinese yam slices (or 100-120g of fresh Chinese yam) and 100-150g of glutinous rice to make congee. Serve warm in the morning and evening. This is used for qi deficiency with turbid phlegm.

What to pay attention to in the diet for pediatric pneumonia

1. Avoid greasy and heavy-flavored foods

Children with pneumonia have reduced digestive capacity. Eating too greasy food can affect their digestion. Therefore, during the illness, it is important to pay attention to the rationality of the diet when supplementing the child's nutrition. Salted duck egg yolks, crab roe, cod liver oil, etc. should not be given to children. If your child is used to having hot milk in the morning, make sure to remove the layer of oil on top.

2. Avoid high-protein diet

During the illness, the excessive intake of protein should be reduced for the child. Fish, chicken, and lean meat should be consumed in moderation. If the child consumes too much protein during the illness, it can lead to increased urine output, which can easily remove water from the child's body. This is especially important for children with fever.
