Treating Acute Appendicitis: Traditional Chinese Medicine Methods and Remedies

Acute appendicitis can be classified into two types: acute and chronic. The following are the treatment methods and remedies for relieving acute appendicitis. First, we need to understand how acute appendicitis is caused in order to know how to prevent and treat it. We also need to know the symptoms of acute appendicitis in order to take timely measures when the disease occurs.

Acute appendicitis can be further classified into several types: acute suppurative appendicitis, gangrenous and perforated appendicitis, peri-appendiceal abscess, and acute simple appendicitis. Understanding these causes is the key to treatment. The following are some methods recommended by traditional Chinese medicine, which you might find helpful!

Differentiation of Syndromes

Heat accumulation type: Transient right lower abdominal pain, continuous or intermittent worsening of abdominal pain, accompanied by bloating, nausea, belching; poor appetite, constipation, pale or yellow urine. Tongue is normal, thin white coating, pulse is taut or thin and astringent.

[Treatment] Clear heat and resolve dampness. Da Huang Mu Dan Tang, or Jin Hong Tang, Hong Teng decoction with modifications. Main ingredients: rhubarb, moutan bark, xuanming powder (dissolved), peach kernel, winter melon seed.

Heat and dampness type: Intensified right lower abdominal tenderness, pain worsens upon pressure, body temperature above 38°C if heat predominates over dampness, significant increase in white blood cell count, severe abdominal pain, obvious pain upon pressure, dry mouth with desire to drink, constipation, short red urine, red tongue, yellow greasy coating, pulse is taut, slippery, and rapid.

[Treatment] Clear heat and resolve dampness. Lian Qiao Yin Fei Tang, main ingredients: honeysuckle, dandelion, rhubarb, moutan bark, peach kernel, red peony root, di ding, chuan lian zi, pangolin, hong teng, licorice.

Heat toxin type: Signs of peritonitis can spread throughout the abdomen, diffuse tenderness, rebound tenderness, and abdominal muscle tension. If yin is damaged by heat toxin, there is high fever or continuous fever that does not subside, frequent sweating, restlessness, thirst, red face and eyes, dry lips and halitosis, vomiting and loss of appetite, sunken eyes, constipation or diarrhea-like symptoms, short red urine. Pulse is taut, slippery, or forceful and rapid, tongue is red and dry or yellow and thick and greasy.

[Treatment] Clear heat and detoxify. Jia Wei Qing Chang Yin with modifications, main ingredients: honeysuckle, forsythia, violet, dandelion, scutellaria, dang gui, hong teng, yi yi ren, winter melon seed, rhubarb, chuan po, zhi shi.

Experienced Prescriptions

(1) 50g honeysuckle, 50g dandelion, 25g moutan bark, 15g rhubarb, 12g red peony root, 9g chuan lian zi, 9g peach kernel, 9g licorice. Take 1-2 doses per day, decoct with water and divide into 2 or 4 doses to be taken.

(2) 100g chicken blood vine, 50g di ding, 25g chuan lian zi. Take 1 dose per day, decoct with water and divide into 2 doses to be taken.

(3) Acupuncture at Zu San Li, Lan Wei Xue, and A Shi Xue. For vomiting, add Nei Guan Xue.

(4) 50g coix seed, 25g winter melon seed, 15g moutan bark, 15g peach kernel, 15g violet, decoct with 300ml of water until 100ml remains. Divide into 2 doses and take twice daily.

(5) 100g red vine, 100g honeysuckle, 15g raw rhubarb. Decoct with yellow wine and divide into 2 doses to be taken. Take 1 dose daily.

1. Acupuncture Therapy

(1) Main points: Lan Wei Xue, Shang Ju Xu, Zu San Li. For nausea and vomiting, add Nei Guan and Shang Wan. For fever, add He Gu and Qu Chi. For bloating, add Da Chang Shu, etc. Generally, strong stimulation is applied, 2-4 times per day in the early stages of acute appendicitis, with each needle left in for 30 minutes.

(2) Acupuncture points: Main points - Lan Wei Xue, Zu San Li, A Shi Xue. Auxiliary points - For nausea and vomiting, add Shang Wan, Nei Guan; for fever, add Qu Chi, Chi Ze; for bloating, add Da Chang Shu, Ci Liao. Location of Lan Wei Xue: About 2 inches below Zu San Li. Location of A Shi Xue: The point of obvious tenderness in the right lower abdomen (McBurney's point). Treatment method: Generally, only the main points are needled, with 2-3 points needled each time. If certain symptoms are prominent, 1-2 auxiliary points may be added. In terms of technique, except for Chi Ze, which is pierced with a triangular needle to draw blood, the other points are stimulated by twisting and lifting the needle vigorously for 1-2 minutes, and the needle is left in for 30 minutes to an hour, with the needle manipulated every 5-10 minutes. G6805 electronic acupuncture can also be used, using dense and sparse waves, with the intensity of the current adjusted to the patient's tolerance. Needle once or twice a day.
