The Battle Against Bad Breath: Causes, Solutions, and Herbal Tea Remedies

March 14, 2024

When reporting work, as soon as I open my mouth, my boss's expression changes a bit. When going on a blind date with a girl, as soon as I open my mouth, it's over. When chatting with friends, before reaching the climax, they find an excuse to walk away...

It's all because of bad breath!

Bad breath not only makes people increasingly embarrassed, but also makes them increasingly self-conscious. So, I have to stick to the principle of "silence is golden". However, I gradually found that I have fewer opportunities for promotion, a lower success rate in dating, and even my relationship with my best friends is gradually fading away.

Why does bad breath happen?

1. Oral diseases

Usually, people who suffer from periodontitis, poor gum health, periodontal disease, and other oral diseases have a higher chance of breeding and multiplying bacteria in their mouths. These bacteria produce a foul odor when breaking down food residues, resulting in bad breath.

2. Decreased saliva secretion

It is well known that saliva has antibacterial properties.

However, not being able to eat due to illness, dieting for weight loss, and high mental stress can lead to a decrease in saliva secretion. The reduced function of salivary glands in the elderly and hormonal imbalances in women can also reduce saliva secretion. Once there is less saliva, it cannot kill the bacteria in the mouth in a timely manner, giving anaerobic bacteria the opportunity to multiply and cause bad breath.

3. Excessive consumption of spicy and odorous foods

Smoking leads to "yellow teeth", drinking alcohol leads to an "alcoholic breath". These are all common examples.

Eating spicy foods such as onions, ginger, garlic, curry, or consuming odorous foods such as stinky tofu, rotten eggs can also cause bad breath.

How to get rid of bad breath?

Bad breath is embarrassing, and relying solely on not speaking is obviously not a good solution. To get rid of bad breath, here are two recommended methods of making herbal tea:

First method: Honeysuckle Tea

Method: Take 1 gram of honeysuckle, 1 gram of Thousand Sheet Paper, and 2 lohans. Brew them in boiling water for 5 minutes and drink as tea.

Honeysuckle can clear heat and detoxify, alleviate oral diseases; Thousand Sheet Paper can moisten the lungs, promote liver function, and nourish the body; Lohan fruit can promote salivation, relieve thirst, and eliminate phlegm and cough.

Second method: Lemon Osmanthus Tea

Method: Take 2 spoons of sugar osmanthus, 2 slices of fresh lemon, and brew them with water at around 60°C. Drink as tea.

Medical books record that osmanthus can "treat bad breath and improve vision", invigorate the spleen and benefit the stomach, and eliminate toxins. Lemon can strengthen the gums and improve oral environment.

Many people have tried using herbal tea to treat bad breath, but the results are not significant because most herbal teas only cover up the odor but cannot solve the problem fundamentally. Once discontinued, bad breath returns.

However, both honeysuckle tea and lemon osmanthus tea not only have a pleasant aroma but also can alleviate oral diseases and promote saliva secretion, fundamentally solving the problem of bad breath.

Of course, no matter how effective these herbal teas are, they cannot compete with smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating garlic. If you want to treat bad breath, quit these habits.
