Quanzheng San: A Traditional Formula for Treating Facial Nerve Paralysis and More

Quanzheng San is a traditional medicinal formula that is mainly used to dispel wind and transform phlegm. It can be used to treat facial nerve paralysis and can be combined with different Chinese herbs or formulas to treat various diseases!


【Ingredients】

Bai Fuzi, Bai Jiangcan, Quanxie detoxified, equal parts, and processed.

【Dosage and Administration】

Ground into fine powder, take 3g each time, 2-3 times a day, warm wine to administer; can also be made into a decoction, with the dosage determined according to the original formula.

【Application of the Formula】

Quanzheng San is the basic formula for treating facial nerve paralysis. Bai Fuzi and Bai Jiangcan dispel wind and phlegm, relieve spasms; Quanxie assists in dispelling wind and stopping convulsions. When taken with hot wine, the three herbs can directly reach the affected area of the head and face. The key diagnostic points in clinical application are slanted mouth and eyes.

In clinical practice, adding Wugong and Tianma to dispel wind and stop spasms can enhance the effectiveness of the formula. However, Bai Fuzi and Quanxie used in the formula are toxic substances, so the dosage should not be too large and the treatment period should not be too long.


【Modifications in Clinical Practice】

There are many clinical studies related to this formula, often used in combination with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, etc. If the external pathogenic factors are dominant, it can be combined with Daqinjiao Tang and Chuanxiong Tea to disperse them; for long-standing illness with blood stasis, adding Siwu Tang or Taohong Siwu Tang is recommended; for long-standing illness with deficiency, it is advisable to add Buyang Huanwu Tang, Buzhong Yiqi Tang, and Yupingfeng San. Western medicines such as methylcobalamin that nourish the nerves can also be used in combination.

【Contraindications】

It is not suitable for use in cases of qi deficiency and blood stasis, or when there is internal movement of liver wind causing slanting mouth and eyes and hemiplegia. Bai Fuzi and Quanxie in the formula have certain toxicity, so caution should be exercised in their use.

【Modern Research】

Experiments using constant-speed perfusion pump on the hind limb blood vessels of rabbits showed that local application of this formula can reduce the resistance of the perfused blood vessels 20 minutes after application, and the effect reaches its peak after 30 minutes. Similarly, in experiments on rats, the resistance of the hind limb blood vessels decreases 10 minutes after administration, reaches its peak after 30 minutes, and starts to recover after 60 minutes.
