February 21, 2024

The eggs of the pufferfish, including the eggs of the spotted pufferfish, the striped pufferfish, and the dark-colored pufferfish, have medicinal properties such as detoxification, reducing swelling, and relieving pain. They are mainly used to treat breast cancer, sores, and skin diseases. However, it is important to note that pufferfish eggs are highly toxic and should not be taken internally.

【Morphological Characteristics】

The spotted pufferfish is generally 10-15cm long, with fine and weak spines on the head, back, and belly. The spines on the back and belly are separated. The snout, sides of the head and body, and tail are smooth.

The back and sides of the head and body are grayish-brown with a slight greenish tint. Above the pectoral fins, there is a large greenish-black spot with an orange border, as well as a curved blackish-green saddle-shaped spot across the back, with an orange border.

There is a large circular black spot on both sides of the base of the dorsal fin. The belly is white, and the fins are grayish-yellow.

【Harvesting and Storage】

After catching the pufferfish, the eggs are obtained by cutting open the abdomen and used fresh.

【Medicinal Uses】

Pufferfish eggs have detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. They are mainly used to treat breast cancer, sores, and skin diseases.

"Compendium of Materia Medica": For treating skin diseases and sores, grind the pufferfish eggs together with centipedes and apply the mixture with sesame oil.

"The Classic of Herbal Medicine": Pufferfish eggs must be soaked in lime water for a long time and then cooked before consumption. If poisoned, there will be numbness in the lips and tongue, dizziness, inability to walk properly, and leaning to one side while walking.

It is necessary to induce vomiting immediately and then administer the juice of dock sprouts or reed roots. Olive juice and licorice juice can also be used as antidotes. If there is severe abdominal pain, unconsciousness, or collapse, urgently administer a solution made from cow dung, as delay may be fatal.

【Dosage and Administration】

"Supplement to the Materia Medica": Highly toxic.

External use: Apply an appropriate amount topically. Internal use is prohibited.
