When seeing a Chinese doctor, the doctor will always advise us on dietary taboos because certain foods can affect the efficacy of Chinese medicine. So, what should not be eaten when drinking Chinese medicine?

  I. What Vegetables Should Not Be Eaten When Drinking Chinese Medicine

  1. Do not eat radishes when taking Chinese medicine (except for phlegm-resolving and qi-regulating medicine), as radishes have the effects of digestion and qi-dispelling. Especially when taking tonifying medicines like ginseng, eating radishes can reduce the effectiveness of the tonics, rendering them unable to achieve their therapeutic effects.

  2. Patients with digestive tract diseases such as hepatitis and chronic gastritis should not eat garlic when taking spleen-tonifying, stomach-warming, and stomach-invigorating medicines, as garlic contains allicin that can stimulate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing congestion and reducing the effectiveness of the Chinese medicine taken.

  3. Do not eat chili peppers when taking Chinese medicine, especially for heat-related diseases. It is even more inappropriate to eat chili peppers when taking heat-clearing, blood-cooling, or nourishing yin and reducing inflammation medicines, as chili peppers can reduce the effectiveness of the medicine, rendering the treatment ineffective or less effective.
