Di Yu is a commonly used hemostatic Chinese medicine. Its root is used as medicine and it can treat various bleeding symptoms. 【Efficacy and Functions of Di Yu】

1. Hemostatic effect

The hemostatic effect is one of the prominent functions of Di Yu. Pharmacological studies have also confirmed this. Research has shown that the tannin components of Di Yu can shorten the clotting time, thereby achieving a hemostatic effect.

2. Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial

Studies have shown that Di Yu has an improvement effect on swelling caused by inflammation and has inhibitory effects on various bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Shigella, and Proteus.

3. Antiemetic effect

Pharmacological studies have also shown that Di Yu has an antiemetic effect and can inhibit emesis caused by digitalis.


【Usage of Di Yu】

To treat dysentery (bloody or watery): Take 2 qian (about 7.5 grams) of Bai Di Yu, stir-fry 5 Wu Mei (Chinese plum), and take 1 qian (about 3.75 grams) of Shan Cha. Decoct in water and take orally. Use brown sugar as an adjuvant for red dysentery and white sugar for white dysentery.

To treat rectal bleeding: Take 4 liang (about 150 grams) of Di Yu and 3 liang (about 112.5 grams) of Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice). Take 5 qian (about 18.75 grams) each time, decoct in 2 cups of water, add 1 qian (about 3.75 grams) of Sha Ren (cardamom) powder, simmer until half a cup remains, and divide into two doses.

To treat burns and scalds: Fry the roots of Di Yu to make charcoal, grind into powder, and mix with sesame oil to make a 50% ointment. Apply it to the wound several times a day.

Di Yu is cold in nature and should be avoided by people with cold deficiency to prevent worsening of symptoms.

Di Yu contains tannin components and should not be taken with enzyme preparations (such as gastric protease, amylase, and pancreatin) at the same time to avoid reducing efficacy.


【Contraindications of Di Yu】

1. "Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu": It is incompatible with wheat and dwarf lilyturf.

2. "Ben Cao Yan Yi": It should not be used for people with cold deficiency, water diarrhea, or white dysentery.

3. "Yi Xue Ru Men": It is contraindicated for people with cold deficiency and cold dysentery. It should not be used in the early stage of hot dysentery for fear of causing early constipation.

4. "Ben Cao Jing Shu": It is contraindicated for people with weak spleen and diarrhea after childbirth, as well as for those with blood stagnation and prolonged pus and blood in dysentery.

5. "Ben Cao Hui Yan": It should not be used for chronic ulcers and long-term illnesses without inflammation, as well as for those with weakened yang and blood stagnation.

6. "Ben Jing Feng Yuan": It is also strictly contraindicated for people with qi deficiency causing uterine prolapse, prolonged dysentery, and dark and not fresh blood. It can harm the stomach and excessive ingestion can cause lockjaw and loss of appetite.
