January 29, 2024

Blood Full Herb, also known as Blood Full Grass or Bonesetting Herb, is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation and relieving pain. It has a wide range of medicinal uses, including treating injuries from falls and relieving symptoms of infantile paralysis.

【Morphological Characteristics】

Blood Full Herb is a perennial tall herb or semi-shrub, reaching a height of 1-2 meters. Its roots and rhizomes are red in color and release red juice when broken. The stems are herbaceous with distinct ridges. The compound leaves are pinnately divided, with leaflets or linear stipules. There are 3-5 pairs of leaflets, which are elongated oval, oblong, or lanceolate in shape, measuring 4-15 centimeters in length and 1.5-2.5 centimeters in width. The leaflets have a gradually pointed tip, a rounded base, unequal sides, serrated edges, and are sparsely covered with short hairs on the upper surface. The top pair of leaflets is often connected along the petiole, sometimes also connected to the terminal leaflet, while the other leaflets are alternate on the leaf axis, sometimes nearly opposite. The stipules of the leaflets degenerate into bottle-like glandular protuberances.

The inflorescence is terminal and umbel-shaped, measuring about 15 centimeters in length, with a peduncle and 3-5 branching rays forming acute angles. Initially, it is densely covered with yellow short hairs and sometimes mixed with glandular hairs. The flowers are small and have an unpleasant odor. The calyx is covered with short hairs. The corolla is white. The basal part of the stamens is swollen and the anthers are yellow. The ovary has 3 chambers, with a very short or almost absent style and a 3-lobed stigma. The fruit is red and round. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruit ripens from September to October.
