  Cold Medication Taboos

With the decrease in temperature, more and more people are catching colds. Oral over-the-counter drugs for treating colds have minimal side effects and are convenient without affecting work, which conforms to the principle of step-wise drug use. However, when faced with the wide variety of drugs on the market, we must avoid blind selection and must use drugs according to the symptoms. Otherwise, it will not only be ineffective, but may also delay or worsen the condition. Here, we introduce a few simple selection methods.

  Wind-cold type cold

Symptoms include severe chills, mild or no fever, headache, nasal congestion, clear runny nose, itchy throat, and cough. In this case, it is appropriate to choose warm and pungent drugs that dispel wind and cold, such as Jiawei Qianghuo Pills, Sansu Lifai Pills, and Tongxuan Lifai Pills. Do not choose Sangju Ganmao tablets, Yinqiao Jiedu tablets, Lingqiao Jiedu pills, or Lingyang Ganmao tablets, as using them incorrectly can worsen the condition or prolong recovery.

  Wind-heat type cold

Symptoms include high fever, mild chills, severe headache, sore or swollen throat, dry mouth and desire for fluids, cough, and thick yellow sputum. In this case, it is appropriate to choose cool and pungent drugs that clear heat and ventilate the lungs, such as Sangju Ganmao tablets, Yinqiao Jiedu pills, Lingyang Ganmao tablets, or Lingqiao Jiedu pills. Do not choose Jiawei Qianghuo Pills, Sansu Lifai Pills, or Tongxuan Lifai Pills, as using them incorrectly can raise body temperature and worsen throat pain.

Cold caused by cold and dampness

This type of cold is caused by external wind and cold. Patients often feel fever, cold, and headache. They may also experience nausea, vomiting, fullness and stuffiness in the stomach, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In this case, we can choose drugs that dispel wind and transform dampness, such as Huoxiang Zhengqi water or Huoxiang Zhengqi liquid, and should not take Baohe pills or Hawthorn pills.

Combined exterior and interior syndrome cold

Symptoms include high fever with aversion to cold, severe headache and dizziness, bitter taste and dryness in the mouth, swollen and painful throat, constipation, and red and painful urine. In this case, drugs that relieve both exterior and interior syndromes, such as Fangfeng Tongsheng Pills, should be chosen.

  Qi deficiency type cold

Symptoms include general physical weakness, low resistance, sweating easily, intolerance to wind and cold, fatigue, loss of appetite, mild fever, clear runny nose, and frequent or recurrent colds. In this case, general cold medicine is not effective, and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Pills should be chosen.

In these cold situations, we must understand which medications should not be taken. In fact, in our daily lives, we often experience colds. So, what should we pay attention to when we have a cold?
