[Understanding Gestational Diabetes and Its Impact on Mother and Baby]

January 25, 2024

Gestational Diabetes, a condition familiar to mothers, is easily caused by changes in hormone levels during pregnancy. So is gestational diabetes caused by eating?

  [The Hazards of Gestational Diabetes]

In most cases, gestational diabetes will naturally heal after childbirth, but the state of high blood sugar is not suitable for the growth and development of the baby. Gestational diabetes is a high-risk pregnancy, and improper blood sugar control can have a significant impact on both the mother and the baby.

For the fetus, high blood sugar in pregnant women can pass through the placenta, leading to high blood sugar in the fetus, secondary hyperinsulinemia, and an increased risk of macrosomia and neonatal hypoglycemia.

It also affects the synthesis and release of surfactant in the fetus's lungs, leading to delayed lung maturation in the fetus.

In addition, the incidence of fetal malformation, stillbirth, and placental abruption also increases. For pregnant women, gestational diabetes increases the risk of preeclampsia, difficult labor, and future development of type 2 diabetes.

[Is Gestational Diabetes Caused by Eating?]

Gestational diabetes is a clinical syndrome caused by the combined effects of genetic and environmental factors. Its high-risk factors include advanced maternal age, pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity, excessive weight gain during pregnancy, family history of diabetes, and abnormal reproductive history.

Nutrition and dietary intake during pregnancy, such as excessive energy intake during pregnancy and a high fat-to-energy ratio, are also important environmental factors closely related to the occurrence and development of gestational diabetes.

[Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes]

1. If there are symptoms, the most obvious is the "three more and one less", i.e. increased appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and weight loss.

2. Sometimes it is accompanied by vomiting. The vomiting caused by gestational diabetes is different from pregnancy-related vomiting. Vomiting caused by gestational diabetes is often severe and can even lead to electrolyte disorders.

3. Another common manifestation of gestational diabetes is fatigue. This is because glucose in the body cannot be well utilized but is broken down too quickly, so the body's energy cannot be adequately replenished.

4. Due to the accelerated metabolism of glucose, the content of glucose in the blood and urine increases significantly, so gestational diabetes is also prone to fungal infections.
