【Prescription Name】

  Xie Bai San (Draining White Powder)

【Prescription Composition】

  Di Gu Pi (30g) Sang Bai Pi (fried, 30g) Gan Cao (roasted, 3g)

【Dosage and Administration】

  Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with a pinch of polished rice, add two small cups of water, simmer for seven minutes, and take before meals (modern usage: decoct and take orally).

【Contraindications】

  This prescription has a mild nature and is especially suitable for those with no damage to their vital energy and minimal internal heat. It should not be used for coughing caused by wind-cold or lung deficiency.


【Functions and Effects】

  The main functions include fever reducing, antibacterial, and cough suppressing effects.

  1. Fever reducing: Xie Bai San has a fever reducing effect on experimental fever in rabbits, which is roughly equivalent to some synthetic antipyretic analgesics.

  2. Anti-pathogenic microorganisms: The ingredients of Xie Bai San have a strong inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella typhi, and Influenza A virus strain Jinko 68-1. It also has inhibitory effects on Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli.

  3. Phlegm resolving and cough suppressing: The ingredients of Xie Bai San have phlegm resolving and cough suppressing effects.

【Prescription Explanation】

  Sang Bai Pi in the prescription clears lung heat, drains lung qi, and calms wheezing and coughing. Di Gu Pi drains deep-seated lung fire, particularly suitable for those with yin deficiency and heat. Gan Cao and polished rice nourish the stomach and harmonize the middle. The combination of these four ingredients clears heat without injuring yin and drains the lungs without harming the upright qi, thus calming cough and wheezing.

【Medication Contraindications】

  1. This prescription is not suitable for coughs caused by wind-cold or those with coughs due to deficiency cold.

  2. There are other prescriptions with the same name:

  (1) Qixiao Liangfang prescription, consisting of Sheng Ma, Di Gu Pi, Jie Geng, Gua Lou Ren, Ban Xia, Sang Bai Pi, Xing Ren, and Gan Cao. Mainly used for lung syndrome in children with cough and wheezing accompanied by constipation.

  (2) Zhengzhi Zhunzheng prescription, consisting of Sang Bai Pi, Di Gu Pi, Gan Cao, Bei Mu, Zi Wan, Jie Geng, Dang Gui, and Gua Lou Ren. Mainly used for lung abscess.

  (3) Zabing Yuanliu Xizhu prescription, consisting of Sang Bai Pi, Di Gu Pi, Huang Qin, Huang Lian, Ma Dou Ling, Dan Zhu Ye, Jie Geng, Zhi Zi, Deng Xin Cao, Da Qing Ye, Xuan Shen, and Lian Qiao. Mainly used for skin rashes.
