1. Clearing heat and detoxifying
Di Yu has a cold nature and has the ability to clear heat and detoxify. It is used for sore throat, oral ulcers, and red eyes.
2. Cooling blood and relieving pain
Di Yu contains polyphenols that have an inhibitory effect on fibrinogen, which can shorten blood coagulation time. Therefore, it has the effect of stopping bleeding.
3. Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial
It has a good anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect, which can promote wound healing in a short period of time. It can also kill bacteriophages and inhibit their reproduction in the human body, but it cannot prevent bacteriophages from adsorbing to bacteria.
4. Reducing swelling and treating sores
It is used for treating malignant sores, hangovers, quenching thirst, healing injuries, and postpartum internal blockage. It can be made into a gold sore ointment. It is mainly used for continuous internal leakage and insufficient blood.
[Usage of Di Yu]
For treating dysentery with red or white stool, take two qian (about 6 grams) of Di Yu, fry five Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), and one qian (about 3 grams) of Shan Cha (Catha edulis). Decoct them in water and take it orally. For red dysentery, add red sugar as a decoction, while for white dysentery, add white sugar.
For treating hemorrhoids, take four liang (about 120 grams) of Di Yu and three liang (about 90 grams) of Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice root). Grind them into powder and mix with two cups of water. Add one qian (about 3 grams) of Sha Ren (Cardamom) powder and decoct until half a cup is left. Divide into two doses and take them.
For treating burns and scalds, grind the charred root of Di Yu into powder, mix it with sesame oil to make a 50% ointment, and apply it to the wound several times a day.
[Contraindications of Di Yu]
Di Yu should not be taken by those with deficiency-cold type bleeding disorders, and those with blood deficiency and stasis should use it with caution. It should not be used for evil wheat and winter disease, long-term abscesses without heat, and simultaneous yang decline and blood deficiency. It can cause stomach damage and frequent mouth dryness and loss of appetite if taken wrongly.
Di Yu contains tannins and should not be taken with enzyme preparations (such as pepsin, amylase, and pancreatin) at the same time to avoid reducing its effectiveness.
