It is a tall tree, reaching up to 10 meters. The bark is brown. The leaves are paper-like, broadly rounded or elliptical, measuring 8-25 centimeters long and 5-15 centimeters wide. The apex is gradually pointed or blunt, the base is blunt, and the leaves are smooth and clean. The petiole is 2.5-5 centimeters long.
The pendulous cone-shaped inflorescence is 8-28 centimeters long. The flowers are unisexual and lack petals. The calyx is pink, 5-lobed, with lobes triangular and bar-shaped, covered with short, soft hairs. The stamens are weak and curved, and there are a few pistillate flowers with hairy ovaries, stalked, 5-lobed, and curved pistils.
The fruit is leathery, ovoid, 4-8 centimeters long and 2.5-3.5 centimeters wide, with beak and dark red when ripe, covered with short, velvety hairs. There are 1-5 elliptical spherical seeds, dark chestnut in color. It flowers in May and fruits in June to July (in Guizhou Province).
