The Potential Dangers of Excessive Ginger Consumption and Who Should Avoid It

January 19, 2024

According to the saying "eat radish in winter and ginger in summer, no need for doctors' prescriptions" and "eat ginger all year round, and get rid of all diseases", it is evident that ginger is beneficial for the human body. However, a study has found that excessive consumption of ginger increases the risk of liver cancer.

Three types of people should not consume excessive ginger:

1. People with Yin deficiency constitution

Yin deficiency refers to a hot and dry constitution, characterized by hot palms and soles, sweaty palms, frequent thirst, dry mouth, dry eyes, dry nose, dry skin, irritability, poor sleep. Ginger is warm in nature, and consuming ginger can exacerbate the symptoms of Yin deficiency.

2. People with excessive internal heat

If you have diseases such as lung heat with dry cough, gastric heat with vomiting and bad breath, bleeding hemorrhoids, painful ulcers, etc., it is not advisable to consume ginger. If it is a hot disease, when consuming ginger, it is necessary to combine it with cold medicines to neutralize the heat of ginger.

3. Patients with hepatitis

Regular consumption of ginger can cause excessive liver heat. To control the excessive liver heat caused by ginger consumption, you can choose some foods that can soothe and regulate the liver, such as drinking hawthorn and chrysanthemum tea. This can eliminate the heat and dryness caused by ginger consumption without harming the body.

Many people use ginger externally to treat hair loss. Indeed, ginger is warm and its flavor is spicy, which can increase local blood circulation, stimulate hair follicles to open, and promote hair regrowth. However, it should be noted that hair loss belongs to a hot disease, and using ginger for a long time can generate heat. Using hot medicines to treat hot diseases conflicts with the principle of "using cold medicines for heat diseases" in traditional Chinese medicine, so it is best to use ginger sparingly.
