People with heavy phlegm and poor digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract are not suitable for using paste formulas. They should first regulate the spleen and stomach, use appetizers to transform phlegm, invigorate the spleen, nourish the heart, replenish qi, and restore gastrointestinal function before they can start tonifying.
Those with yin deficiency constitution (excessive internal heat) should not use ginseng, placenta, deer antler, etc. for tonification. Those with yang deficiency constitution (physical weakness and fear of cold) should avoid using cold-natured tonics such as Ophiopogon, Rehmannia, turtle, etc., so as not to further damage yang qi. If cold-natured tonics are taken, symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and delayed menstruation may occur. In addition, it is generally not advisable for cold sufferers to take tonics, so as not to worsen the condition and prolong the illness.
Shi Suofang said that young people have abundant energy and excessive internal heat, so it is generally not recommended to use paste formulas for tonification. Otherwise, nosebleeds, constipation, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, and other symptoms may occur. Instead, it is advisable to focus on strengthening physical exercise to improve one's own disease resistance.
