Dietary Restrictions for Hemorrhoid Patients: What Foods to Avoid?

January 14, 2024

Hemorrhoids are a common gastrointestinal disease. Due to its high prevalence, many people often ignore it after discovering that they have hemorrhoids, not realizing the need for early treatment measures. First, we need to understand what foods to avoid when you have hemorrhoids. Which ones are forbidden for hemorrhoid patients to eat?

1. Avoid Spicy Foods

Hemorrhoid patients should avoid eating spicy and irritating foods, such as chili peppers, pepper, raw onions, raw garlic, mustard, and ginger. These foods can stimulate congestion and dilation of blood vessels in the rectum and anus, causing pain and swelling during bowel movements, thereby aggravating or inducing hemorrhoids.

2. Avoid Overeating

Many people have developed the bad habit of eating more when the food is good and eating less when the food is not. Overeating high-calorie and high-fat foods, such as chocolate, fatty meat, and pig's feet, can cause uneven hunger and fullness, affecting gastrointestinal function, damaging the spleen and stomach, leading to the generation of dampness, phlegm, and blood stasis, and often causing hemorrhoidal bleeding. Especially after overeating, when the abdomen is distended and the intra-abdominal pressure increases, the blood flow of the hemorrhoidal veins is affected, exacerbating the condition. It is important to develop a habit of having regular bowel movements.

3. Avoid Alcohol

Hemorrhoids are often related to damp-heat. Drinking alcohol can worsen damp-heat conditions. Moreover, alcohol can cause congestion and dilation of hemorrhoidal veins, leading to swelling of hemorrhoidal nodes. Medical research has found that most hemorrhoid patients are particularly sensitive to alcohol. They may feel discomfort in the anus half an hour after drinking alcohol and may experience rectal bleeding the next day. Excessive drinking can have even more serious consequences. Therefore, people with hemorrhoids should avoid alcohol consumption.

4. Avoid Hard Foods

Hemorrhoid patients should not eat hard-to-digest, hard foods. These foods are difficult to digest and can cause constipation, leading to dilation of the rectal blood vessels and recurrence of hemorrhoids.

In order to prevent the further worsening of hemorrhoids, hemorrhoid patients should avoid overeating and control their consumption of spicy and irritating foods in their daily diet. They should eat more vegetables rich in fiber, such as celery, spinach, cabbage, bottle gourd, etc., which can increase intestinal peristalsis and are especially suitable for individuals with habitual constipation. Hemorrhoid patients should follow three dietary restrictions.
