Qi Zheng San: The Herbal Formula for Treating Head and Facial Meridian Disorders

January 6, 2024

According to traditional Chinese medicine, Qi Zheng San has the effect of dispelling wind and phlegm, promoting blood circulation, and stopping spasms. It is a commonly used formula for treating head and facial meridians. The clinical application is based on sudden deviation of the mouth and eyes and a pale tongue with a white coating as the main diagnostic points. So, what are the herbal ingredients in the formula of Qi Zheng San?

【Herbal Ingredients in the Formula of Qi Zheng San】

Equal portions of Bai Fu Zi (Typhonium Rhizome), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Quan Xie (Scorpio) are used in this formula.

Bai Fu Zi: It has the effects of dispelling wind-phlegm, calming spasms, detoxifying, and relieving pain. It is used for conditions such as wind-phlegm obstruction, deviation of the mouth and eyes, slurred speech, wind-induced seizures, tetanus, phlegm-induced headaches, unilateral headaches, scrofulous nodules, and snake bites.

Bai Jiang Can: It dispels wind, relieves spasms, transforms phlegm, and disperses nodules. It is used for conditions such as wind-stroke with loss of voice, seizures, wind-induced headaches, throat wind, goiter, tuberculous lymphadenitis, wind-induced skin rashes, erysipelas, and mastitis.

Quan Xie: It calms wind, stops spasms, promotes blood circulation, relieves pain, and dispels nodules. It is used for conditions such as liver-wind stirring internally, spasms and convulsions, infantile convulsions, wind-stroke with aphasia, hemiplegia, tetanus, wind-damp stubborn arthralgia, unilateral headaches, sores and ulcers, and scrofula.

【Clinical Application of Qi Zheng San】

This formula is commonly used to treat wind-phlegm obstruction in the head and facial meridians. The main diagnostic points for clinical application are sudden deviation of the mouth and eyes and a pale tongue with a white coating.

Efficacy: It has been used to treat more than ten patients with satisfactory results. Significant effects can be achieved when combined with acupuncture. Acupuncture points such as Di Cang Tou Jie Che, Ying Xiang, Feng Chi, Si Zhu Kong, and He Gu Lie Que can be selected.

【Precautions for Using Qi Zheng San】

It is not suitable for patients with Qi deficiency and blood stasis, or those with wind-stroke with deviation of the mouth and eyes and hemiplegia caused by liver-wind stirring internally. Bai Fu Zi and Quan Xie in the formula have certain toxicity, so the dosage should be used with caution.

For patients with facial nerve paralysis (after one month of onset and 90% recovery), when taking modified Qi Zheng San (the clinical formula mentioned above), if symptoms occur within 2 hours, urgent medical attention should be sought. The shaking of the whole body may occur. It is advised that patients with facial paralysis should take a dosage of 1-2g, similar to that of Qi Zheng San, and not consume excessive amounts of yellow wine. The mentioned dosage of 10g is too high, and normal usage requires 100g of yellow wine, which is excessive. Therefore, it is recommended to pay more attention to this. Additionally, this modified formula contains excessive toxic ingredients and should not be used for a prolonged period of time.
