Dabanxia Wan: Resolving Phlegm and Promoting Qi Circulation for Treating Coughing

Dabanxia Wan, the name of a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, comes from the book "Sheng Ji Zong Lu". It is used for resolving phlegm and promoting qi circulation. It is mainly used to treat coughing.


[Composition of the Prescription] 4 liang of Dabanxia (washed with hot water 7 times, remove the slippery texture, and then dried and ground into powder), 3 liang of fresh ginger (finely grated), 3 liang of honey, 2 liang of Qingzhou jujube (remove the flesh, peel, and core, then put it in a silver or stone vessel together with the ginger, honey, and Dabanxia powder, and cook until it becomes thick), half liang of muzhi (Aucklandia lappa), half liang of chenxiang (Aquilaria sinensis), half liang of Qingju pi (Citrus reticulata Blanco, soaked in hot water to remove the white part, and then dried), half liang of baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala), half liang of chenju pi (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis, soaked in hot water to remove the white part, and then dried), half liang of dried ginger (processed with heat), half liang of fuzi (processed and cracked, remove the skin and navel), half liang of rou dou kou (Myristica fragrans, remove the shell), and half liang of hong dou kou (Myristica fragrans, remove the shell and red skin).

[Preparation of the Prescription] Grind the above 13 ingredients into powder, except for the first 4 ingredients. Mix the powder with Dabanxia paste to form pills, each about the size of a wutongzi (a type of seed).

[Functions and Indications] Dabanxia Wan is used to treat phlegm accumulation, obstruction in the diaphragm region, coughing, and wheezing.

[Dosage and Administration] Take 10 pills each time, swallow them on an empty stomach with dried ginger and jujube decoction. Increase the dosage to 15 pills if necessary.

[Introduction to Medicinal Ingredients]

Dabanxia: It can dry dampness, transform phlegm, descend rebellious qi, and relieve vomiting. It is used to treat damp phlegm cold beverages, vomiting, reverse flow of qi, excessive phlegm and coughing, fullness and distension in the chest and diaphragm, phlegm stagnation causing headaches, dizziness and insomnia. It can also be used externally to treat abscesses and swelling. It is used for excessive phlegm and cough, dizziness and palpitations caused by phlegm and fluid retention, dizziness and vertigo caused by internal phlegm, vomiting and reverse flow of qi, chest and epigastric distension and fullness, and Meihuoqi syndrome. When used externally, it can treat abscesses and swelling caused by phlegm nodules. Ginger and Dabanxia are commonly used together to descend rebellious qi and relieve vomiting.

Fresh Ginger: In hot weather, it has the functions of stimulation, sweating, cooling, and refreshing. It can relieve fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, insomnia, bloating, and abdominal pain. Ginger also has the function of invigorating the stomach and increasing appetite. In hot summer weather, saliva and ginger can also relieve or alleviate gastric diseases.

Muzhi: It promotes qi circulation, relieves pain, invigorates the spleen, and aids digestion. It can be used for epigastric abdominal distension and pain, poor appetite and vomiting caused by spleen and stomach qi stagnation, pain in the ribs caused by liver and gallbladder qi stagnation, and invigorating the spleen and dispersing stagnation. It can adjust gastric and intestinal qi stagnation and treat abdominal pain, diarrhea, and tenesmus.

Baizhu: It has the effects of invigorating the spleen, replenishing qi, drying dampness, promoting diuresis, stopping sweating, and stabilizing the fetus. It is used for spleen deficiency with poor appetite, bloating and diarrhea, dizziness and palpitations caused by phlegm and fluid retention, edema, spontaneous sweating, and restless fetal movement. It can also eliminate dampness, invigorate the middle burner, replenish qi, warm the middle burner, remove dampness from the spleen and stomach, eliminate gastric heat, strengthen the spleen and stomach, promote food intake, relieve thirst, and stabilize the fetus.

Fuzi: It can restore yang and save collapse, tonify fire and aid yang, and dispel cold and dampness. It is used to treat excess yin and insufficient yang, loss of yang due to excessive sweating, vomiting, and collapse, cold pain in the heart and abdomen, cold diarrhea caused by spleen leakage, edema and swelling in the feet, slow convulsions in children, wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, sprains and cramps, impotence, cold uterus, ulcers, and all diseases caused by cold and stagnation.
