Choosing the Right Medication: Regulating Internal Heat with Traditional Chinese Medicine

December 28, 2023

In the relatively dry autumn climate, the accumulation of internal heat is exacerbated, and many people choose to reserve some traditional "heat-clearing medicine" to eliminate internal heat. Experts remind that although it is all about internal heat, the "ignition point" is different, and the symptoms are also different. If medication is used blindly without considering the symptoms, it may likely worsen the situation and cause greater trouble for the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine classifies internal heat into several types. "Heart heat" is mainly characterized by redness at the tip of the tongue and recurrent oral ulcers; "lung heat" is mainly characterized by persistent dry cough and other respiratory symptoms; "liver heat" is mainly manifested as irritability, redness at the edges of the tongue, and red eyes; "stomach heat" is often accompanied by bad breath, gum bleeding, constipation, etc. Excessive virtual fire caused by kidney deficiency is mainly manifested as night sweats, irritability, and insomnia. Different types of heat require different medications for regulation.

Water decoction of Chinese herbal medicine is the preferred method for regulating heat

For regulating heat, the preferred method is to make a decoction of Chinese herbal medicine. Because the decoction can be adjusted and matched according to each person's actual condition. For example, if a patient has both internal heat and spleen and stomach deficiency and cold, warm herbal ingredients can be added to neutralize the damage of heat-clearing herbs to the spleen and stomach, which cannot be achieved with ready-made Chinese patent medicines; if some young people find it troublesome to make decoctions at home or find it difficult to master the process, they can also purchase powdered Chinese herbal medicine from the hospital. The hospital grinds the prepared herbs into powder, and the patient only needs to mix it with water at home. The effect is not much different from that of water decoction.

In addition, for people with less severe symptoms, such as frequent nosebleeds, gum bleeding, etc., they can also choose Chinese herbs such as honeysuckle, dandelion, chrysanthemum, and thistle. They can be crushed or boiled in water and taken continuously for about a week. However, it should be noted that people with spleen and stomach deficiency and frequent diarrhea should not use them.

Do not take Chinese patent medicines for more than a week

If Chinese patent medicines are chosen to regulate internal heat, they must be selected according to the symptoms. For those with strong "heart heat," "Dao Chi Dan" can be chosen; for those with strong "lung heat," "Ling Yang Qing Fei Wan" can be used; for regulating "liver heat," "Long Dan Xie Gan Wan" is suitable; for clearing "stomach heat," "Niu Huang Qing Wei Wan" can be tried; and for rising virtual fire, "Liu Wei Di Huang Wan" can be taken under the guidance of a doctor.

It is worth mentioning that for patients using Chinese patent medicines to regulate heat, these medicines should not be used as long-term treatments. Generally, treatment is recommended for 3-7 days. Because "medicine is three parts poison," long-term use of these heat-clearing medicines may have negative effects on the body. For example, the commonly used Niu Huang Jie Du Pian may cause chronic arsenic poisoning with long-term use. If the symptoms do not improve after a week, medical attention is necessary.
