Datura stramonium, also known as Utu and Aihong, has the effects of stopping bleeding and itching, but it is toxic, so caution is needed when collecting and digging it.
Toxicity of Datura stramonium
This plant is highly toxic. Internal use should be extremely cautious.
Poisoning can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, restlessness, and decreased blood pressure; severe cases can cause dizziness, unsteady gait, and spasms.
First aid methods:
(1) Gastric lavage, administration of sedatives, and intravenous fluids;
(2) Take 3 qian of licorice, 3 qian of dried ginger, and 5 qian of mung beans, decoct in water and take orally.
Medicinal uses of Datura stramonium
Taste: pungent, bitter, warm. It is toxic.
Main uses: laxative, diuretic; external use for stopping bleeding and itching.
It is used for edema, ascites caused by liver cirrhosis; externally for treating traumatic bleeding, lymph node tuberculosis, bruises, swelling and pain, skin itching, and tinea.
Dosage: 1-3 fen of dried powder, sprinkle on the affected area or decoct in water for external washing.
Precautions for using Datura stramonium
Avoid contact of the juice with the skin during collection and digging to prevent allergic reactions. Pregnant women and those with weak constitution should avoid taking it.
