Teenagers' Vocal Care during Puberty

Teenagers generally enter puberty at around 14-16 years old. This is the stage when their larynx and vocal cords grow and develop. Common symptoms include hoarseness, narrow vocal range, vocal fatigue, local congestion and swelling, and increased secretions. Puberty usually lasts for six months to one year. In addition to using their voice scientifically and reasonably to avoid excessive fatigue, it is also important for teenagers to pay attention to dietary adjustments.

First, pay attention to the intake of collagen and elastin

The vocal organs mainly consist of the larynx, vocal folds, and thyroid cartilage, which are composed of collagen and elastin proteins. The vocal cords are also composed of elastic protein membranes. Therefore, teenagers in puberty should eat more foods rich in collagen and elastin proteins, such as pig's trotters, pig skin, tendon, fish, beans, and seafood.

Second, intake of B vitamins and calcium

Vitamin B2 and vitamin B6 promote skin development; calcium promotes the development of thyroid cartilage. Foods rich in B vitamins include celery, tomatoes, eggs, beans, animal liver, and fresh fruits. Foods rich in calcium include fish, shrimp, milk, and soy products.

Vitamin B has many benefits: it helps improve sexual quality, assists in the treatment of depression, and helps the skin resist sun damage.

Third, choose soft and refined foods as staple and side dishes

Avoid eating fried peanuts, popcorn, crispy rice, nuts, and fried foods that are hard and dry to prevent mechanical damage to the throat.

Fourth, drink plenty of water

Drinking water can reduce or remove local secretions and prevent secondary infections.

Fifth, avoid eating sour and bitter foods

Foods such as garlic, chili, ginger, and chives can irritate the trachea, larynx, and vocal cords. Avoid drinking too hot water or consuming too many cold drinks, as extreme temperatures are not beneficial for the vocal cords. Smoking and alcohol should be avoided to prevent aggravation of local aseptic inflammation.
