Natural Remedies for Insomnia: Sour Jujube Seed Tea and Perilla Leaf Wine

March 4, 2024

Insomniacs often wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble falling back asleep. During the day, they may experience headaches, drowsiness, forgetfulness, loss of appetite, and sometimes even feelings of irritability and shortness of breath. If you don't want to take traditional Chinese herbal medicine, I recommend soaking some medicinal wine or drinking herbal tea. These can promote blood circulation and help with the treatment of insomnia.

1. Sour Jujube Seed Tea

Roast 20 sour jujube seeds until half-cooked. Grind them with a rolling pin and brew with boiling water before bedtime. Cover and let it steep for about 10 minutes. Drink a large cup before sleep.

Sour jujube seed is the seed of jujube. When jujube is ripe in autumn, the fruit is soaked overnight. Rub off the pulp and remove the seeds. Sun-dry the seeds. The seeds have a slightly sour taste, and the best ones are large, plump, and have a purple-red skin without a shell. Sour jujube seed can calm the mind, nourish the liver, and stop sweating.

Sour jujube seed can nourish the liver, calm the mind, and stop sweating. It has a sedative and hypnotic effect and is effective in treating symptoms such as restlessness, insomnia, palpitations, and night sweats caused by weakness. However, it is important to note that roasting for too long will destroy its active ingredients, so it is best to use low heat and remove the seeds when they turn slightly yellow.

2. Perilla Leaf Wine

Wash and dry 500 grams of perilla leaves and put them in 30 degrees of distilled liquor (about 4000 milliliters). Add about 1000 grams of rock sugar and let it sit for 2 months before opening and drinking. Perilla is an annual herb and has been used in Chinese medicine for over 2000 years.

Perilla leaves have the effect of regulating qi and nourishing blood. They are used to treat colds with chills, fever, cough, asthma, abdominal distension, and restless fetal movements. Perilla leaves can also counteract fish and crab toxins. It is used for common colds with chills, fever, headache, stuffy nose, and cough or chest discomfort. Drinking perilla leaf wine can treat insomnia, as it not only has a sedative effect but also promotes sleep.
