  [Functions of Dongchongxiacao]

Dongchongxiacao, also known as Cordyceps sinensis, is a famous and precious tonic in traditional Chinese medicine. It is not actually a grass, but rather a combination of insects and fungi. Cordyceps is a member of the Ascomycota family of fungi.

Dongchongxiacao is mainly distributed in provinces such as Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, Tibet, Guizhou, Gansu, and grows in high-altitude shrubs and grasslands at an altitude of 3,000-4,000 meters. Every summer, the spores of the Cordyceps, which were originally parasitic on the larvae of bat moths, mature and disperse. Under suitable temperature and humidity, the spores will germinate and grow into mycelium. When it invades the larvae that hibernate in the soil, it feeds on the larvae and lives as a parasite. Due to the destruction of the internal structure of the larvae, the insects die, leaving behind empty shells filled with mycelium. When winter ends and spring comes, the dormant fungal core begins to grow, and a stalk-like fruiting body emerges from the head of the larva and appears on the ground, becoming a "Cordyceps".

Dongchongxiacao is known as having the same medicinal effects as ginseng. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine to nourish the lungs and kidneys, stop coughing, transform phlegm, and stop bleeding. It has significant therapeutic effects on conditions such as lower back and knee pain, impotence and premature ejaculation, and pulmonary tuberculosis.

  [Hypoglycemic Effect of Dongchongxiacao]

According to Western medicine, diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar. High blood sugar is caused by a deficiency in insulin secretion or impaired biological function, or a combination of both. Prolonged high blood sugar in diabetes leads to chronic damage and dysfunction of various tissues, especially the eyes, kidneys, heart, blood vessels, and nerves.

Students from the First Clinical Medical College of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine have conducted research on the hypoglycemic effects of commonly used single Chinese herbal medicines, with a focus on the hypoglycemic effects of Dongchongxiacao. Their research paper was published in the February 2012 issue of Journal of Jilin Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The paper states that Dongchongxiacao has a significant hypoglycemic effect. It can stimulate insulin secretion, reduce hepatic glycogen output, stimulate liver glucose metabolism enzyme activity, and decrease glucose transporter protein content. This is directly related to the multi-target characteristics of Dongchongxiacao.
