The Cooling Benefits of Lily and Osmanthus Flower Teas for Summer Wellness

February 2, 2024

Lily flowers, from the perspective of botanical classification, belong to the family Liliaceae. The dried flowers of lilies are rich in vitamins and various minerals. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, lily flowers have a cooling nature and can help soothe coughs and moisten the lungs. They are also gentle in nature, making them beneficial to consume in summer.

When brewing lily flower tea, it is important to pay attention to the amount used. Floral teas generally have a slightly bitter taste compared to regular tea leaves, so only 2-3 grams are needed. It is best to use boiling water and pour a small amount into the cup first. This serves two purposes: to moisten the dried flowers and allow their flavors to dissolve more easily in water, and to cleanse the flowers, resulting in a better taste. Let it steep for 10 minutes before drinking.

Lily flower tea has the benefits of calming the mind, improving cognitive function, and moistening the lungs to relieve coughs. If the taste is too bitter, a small amount of honey can be added, but not for individuals with diabetes.

In addition to lily flower tea, osmanthus is also commonly consumed. Is osmanthus really suitable for summer consumption? From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, osmanthus has a warm nature and can be paired with green tea or oolong tea. This combination of the warm nature of osmanthus and the cool nature of green tea is ideal for individuals with weak spleen and stomach who still want to drink tea.

The amount of osmanthus used for each brewing should not be too much, and the water temperature should not be too high, generally around 85 degrees Celsius. Osmanthus does not need to be washed. Pour a small amount of water first to moisten the flowers and tea, and then fill the glass with water. Let it steep for 2 to 3 minutes before drinking.

Incorporating osmanthus into green tea in summer enhances its fragrance and also helps eliminate bad breath, which is a convenient and effective method.

In summer, many people experience dry skin or hoarseness due to excessive internal heat. Drinking osmanthus green tea or osmanthus oolong tea regularly can help alleviate these symptoms.
