  【Clinical Applications】

  1. Aphthous Ulcers

Aphthous ulcers can occur in various parts of the mouth, commonly on the inner lip, tongue, and cheek mucosa, and can spread to the lips and throat. Initially, the mucosa becomes congested and swollen, with possible formation of vesicles. Later, various-sized erosions or ulcers develop, covered with thick fibrous exudate, forming a gray-white or yellow false membrane with clear boundaries that are easily wiped off. After wiping, a bloody erosion remains, which soon reappears as a false membrane. Local pain and enlarged lymph nodes are present. Refusal to eat, restlessness, and fever of 39-40℃ may occur. Mild cases recover with normal body temperature in about a week, while severe cases may experience dehydration and acidosis.

  2. Herpetic Stomatitis

At the onset, fever can reach 38-40℃. 1-2 days later, small vesicles, 2-3 mm in diameter, appear on the oral mucosa, including the gums, inner lip, tongue, and cheek mucosa. The vesicles are surrounded by erythema and quickly rupture to form ulcers, which are covered with yellow-white fibrous secretions. Multiple ulcers can merge into irregular large ulcers, sometimes involving the hard palate and pharynx. Canker sores can also occur in the corners of the mouth and on the skin around the lips. The pain is severe, and there may be refusal to eat, drooling, and restlessness. Submandibular lymph nodes often become enlarged. Body temperature returns to normal after 3-5 days, with a course of 1-2 weeks. Enlarged local lymph nodes can persist for 2-3 weeks.
