Coughing and Wheezing: Understanding the Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach

January 11, 2024

Coughing and wheezing are common clinical symptoms. They include diseases such as upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, asthmatic bronchitis, and emphysema in Western medicine.

In traditional Chinese medicine, coughing is divided into two categories: external and internal. External coughing is further divided into wind-cold, wind-heat, and dry-heat coughing. In the early stages of the disease, symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and general discomfort may be present. Dry-heat coughing is characterized by a dry cough and dryness in the mouth, nose, and throat. Internal coughing is mostly caused by phlegm-dampness, liver fire, and yin deficiency and is often accompanied by other organ diseases with a longer duration.

Wheezing is a respiratory disease characterized by rapid breathing, even with mouth breathing, shoulder lifting, and flaring of the nostrils. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is divided into two categories: deficiency and excess. Excess wheezing is characterized by rapid and urgent breathing, coarse and surging breaths, and long and deep exhalations. Deficiency wheezing is characterized by shortness of breath, difficulty in continuation of breathing, weak and low breathing sounds, and rapid deep inhalation. Therefore, this type of medicinal wine has the function of stopping coughing, resolving phlegm, and calming wheezing. Different types of medicinal wines can be selected according to the different manifestations of coughing and wheezing.
