Baji Tian Wine: A Traditional Remedy for Kidney Health and Vitality

Baji Tian Wine, created by the Medicine King Sun Simiao, is recorded in the book "The Essential Recipes for Emergency Use". It is mainly composed of Baji Tian, Niuxi (Achyranthes bidentata), Digu Pi (Lycium chinense), and other ingredients. Baji Tian is a perennial vine herb of the Rubiaceae family, mainly produced in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Its root is used as medicine and it is known for its effects of tonifying the kidney and yang, strengthening the tendons and bones, and dispelling wind and dampness. Sun Simiao's Baji Tian Wine has been passed down for thousands of years.


[Recipe]

Baji Tian 150g, Niuxi 75g, Digu Pi (Lycium chinense) 70g, Maidong 100g, Gan Dihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa) 100g, Fang Feng 45g, Baijiu 1000ml.

[Preparation Method]

Grind the 6 ingredients into coarse powder, put them in a gauze bag and tie it tightly, then soak it in the wine for 15 days. Filter out the residue. This wine is prepared in mid-September of the lunar calendar and consumed in early October. The residue can be dried and ground into fine powder for consumption with the wine.

[Functions and Indications]

Baji Tian Wine has the effects of tonifying the liver and kidney, supplementing deficiency and boosting yang. It is used for conditions such as kidney deficiency, insufficient erection, waist and knee pain, etc.

In the original book, it is used to treat "deficiency and weakness, inability to erect due to yang phlegm, five strains and seven injuries, and various diseases", and it can also "help with digestion". Therefore, it is suitable for conditions of kidney deficiency.

Chen Yijiang's "Two Hundred Prescriptions for Medicinal Wines": it only uses Baji Tian and Niuxi, soaked in white wine, and has the effects of tonifying the kidney, assisting yang, and promoting joint mobility. It is suitable for long-term rheumatism, liver and kidney deficiency, with symptoms such as waist and knee pain, weak tendons and bones, or difficulty in joint flexion and extension, cold limbs, and difficulty in walking.

[Dosage]

Take 10-30ml three times a day. Drink it warm. It is better to continuously consume the wine to maintain its potency, and avoid excessive consumption.

[Modifications]

In clinical applications, additional ingredients can be added according to the specific symptoms. The modifications are as follows: for cold limbs and aversion to cold, add 50g of dried ginger and 50g of cinnamon heart; for forgetfulness, add 50g of Yuanzhi (Polygala tenuifolia); for deficiency fatigue with spontaneous sweating, add 50g of Huangqi (Astragalus membranaceus). For each additional 50g of herbs, add 100-150ml of white wine.

[Precautions]

After taking the medicine, avoid consuming raw and cold foods, pork, fish, oil, and garlic. Do not take it in the spring for six days, in the autumn and winter for 27 days, and in the summer.
