Thumb Rubbing Technique: An Effective Method for Promoting Qi and Relieving Various Symptoms

December 16, 2023

Combining the techniques of One Finger Zen Pushing Method and Finger Rubbing Method, the practitioner applies pressure with the thumb's radial side on the acupoints or meridians on the body surface. The other four fingers are kept together, with the palm and fingers naturally extended. The index, middle, ring, and little fingers are used to apply pressure to the corresponding treatment areas. The wrist should be relaxed and slightly bent at around 160°. Then, the wrist joint is actively swung, causing the thumb interphalangeal joint to perform flexion and extension movements, while the other four fingers rub in a circular motion on the treatment areas. This technique is effective in promoting broad chest and regulating Qi, invigorating the spleen and stomach, promoting blood circulation and regulating menstruation, soothing the liver and relieving depression, and relaxing tendons and promoting meridian circulation. It is commonly used to treat symptoms such as cough, excessive phlegm, distension and pain in the epigastric region, indigestion, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, and pain in the chest and hypochondriac region caused by traumatic injury.
