Five Methods for Waist Manipulation: Effective Techniques for Treating Pain and Dysfunction

December 18, 2023

There are five methods of manipulating the waist.

1. Shoulder Manipulation Method

The patient lies prone, and the operator stands on the patient's side. One hand pushes and presses on the painful area of the waist, while the other hand lifts the opposite shoulder forward to the maximum extent, and both hands exert force to manipulate and push simultaneously.

2. Leg Manipulation Method

The patient lies prone, and the operator stands on the patient's side. One hand pushes and presses on the painful area of the waist, while the other hand lifts the lower limb from the opposite side to the maximum extent, and both hands manipulate and push simultaneously.

3. Oblique Manipulation Method

The patient lies on one side, with the upper limb flexed at the hip and knee joints and the lower limb extended. The operator uses one hand to push and press on the front or back of the patient's shoulder, while the other hand supports the patient's buttocks or anterior superior iliac spine. The patient's waist is rotated to the maximum extent, and both hands exert force simultaneously to manipulate in opposite directions.

4. Lumbar Vertebra Rotation Manipulation Method

The patient is seated in a forward bend position (at the required angle), and an assistant holds the lower limb and pelvis. The operator sits on the patient's side and uses one thumb to press on the spinous process that needs to be manipulated. The other hand extends from the healthy side of the patient's armpit, hooks and supports the cervical area. The operator rotates the patient's waist from the forward bend position to the healthy side. When rotated to the maximum extent, one hand exerts force to manipulate the waist, while the thumb of the other hand simultaneously pushes and presses the spinous process.

5. Posterior Extension Manipulation Method

The patient lies supine. One hand presses on the painful area of the waist, while the other hand lifts the lower limb from the front and above the knee joints, and both hands exert force simultaneously to extend and press.

【Effects and Applications】The waist manipulation methods have the effects of unblocking meridians, lubricating joints, and correcting anatomical positions. They are commonly used to treat waist sprain, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar vertebral subluxation, or joint dysfunction.
