Family Massage for Weight Loss: Effective Techniques for Simple Obesity

November 30, 2023

【Overview】

The standard weight of the human body (in kilograms) is calculated as follows: for males, it is height (in centimeters) minus 105, and for females, it is height (in centimeters) minus 110. If the weight exceeds 10% to 20%, it is considered overweight, and if it exceeds 20%, it is diagnosed as obesity. Obesity can be classified as pathological obesity or simple obesity. Simple obesity is more common in daily life. It is mainly caused by consuming more calories than the body can burn, resulting in a large accumulation of fat under the skin. Dysfunction in the nervous and endocrine systems, decreased ability to regulate physical activity and metabolism, as well as genetic factors and impaired liver and kidney function, can all contribute to the development of obesity. Obesity is troublesome, not only affecting physical appearance but also increasing the risk of various diseases such as fatty liver, heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. It can also cause inconvenience in daily activities such as exercise, sitting, lying down, working, and socializing.

Family massage for weight loss is suitable for simple obesity.

Obesity often affects the entire body, but some people may only have noticeable fat accumulation in certain areas. Therefore, a general weight loss massage therapy should be applied first, followed by specific massage techniques targeted at different areas of obesity.

【Massage Therapy】

(1) Sit down and use the fingertips of your thumb to vigorously stimulate Hegu, Zusanli, and Fenglong points for 1 minute each.

(2) Lie face down or face up, and have a family member use their right palm to massage the Yin meridians of the lower extremities from top to bottom, applying moderate heat. Then use strong pressure to massage the Sanyinjiao point for 2 minutes.

(3) Self-pressing method for ear acupuncture (see Figure 7-1): Press the endocrine point (inside the tragus incisura), Sanjiao point (below the posterior opening of the external auditory canal, at the midpoint of a line connecting the tragus and the inner side of the tragus), Xiaochang point (inside the antitragus, one-third from the top), Kidney point (below the bifurcation of the tragus), Stomach point (at the disappearance of the tragus), Spleen point (above the back upper part of the ear canal), and Lung point (below the center of the back of the ear canal). After disinfecting the earlobe, stick a square adhesive tape (0.5cm × 0.5cm) with Wang Buxing's seed on the ear acupoints. Select 2 or 3 acupoints every day and press them until there is a sour, swollen, hot, or painful sensation. Press each acupoint for 1 minute, especially before meals or when feeling hungry. One week is a course of treatment, with a rest day between two courses. Four courses of treatment should be completed in total.

Adjust the treatment according to the symptoms.

1. Waist and back weight loss

Lie face down, and have a family member use their right palm to massage the bladder meridian on the back and waist, repeatedly, until the skin becomes slightly red. Then use the thumb to massage the Pishu, Ganshu, Dachangshu, and Shenshu points for 1 minute each. Finally, place the palm on the sacral area and use a horizontal friction technique, applying moderate heat.

2. Chest and abdomen weight loss

Lie face up, and have a family member place both palms on the sides of the midline, slowly and forcefully massage from the chest to the abdomen along the midline, repeatedly, until the skin becomes warm and red. Then have the family member overlap their palms on the navel, and massage the abdomen in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction, from small to large, from large to small, gradually increasing the pressure. Continue massaging the abdomen for 5 minutes, until there is a sense of looseness, intestinal sounds, or the feeling of gas passing. Finally, use the thumb to massage the Qimen, Zhangmen, Jingmen (below the 12th rib, free end, see Figure 7-2), and Liangmen points (4 inches above the navel, 2 inches beside the middle epigastric fossa, see Figure 7-2) for 1 minute each.
