Meridian massage for weight loss is achieved by adjusting diet and regulating the functions of the body's meridians and organs. With the increasing emphasis on personal well-being, traditional Chinese meridian massage has gained recognition for its ability to relieve muscle soreness, improve blood circulation, and detoxify the body. Many hospitals, beauty salons, and wellness centers offer meridian massage services. However, it is important to have a clear understanding of this practice as it is a form of medical treatment.

  1. What is Meridian Massage?

Meridian massage is a therapeutic technique based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Doctors diagnose and treat patients by identifying imbalances in the meridians and applying massage techniques to regulate the flow of energy through these meridians, including the Du Mai (also known as the Governor Vessel) and the Twelve Meridians (also known as the Conception Vessel). From a nature perspective, meridian massage falls within the scope of external treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. It is considered the original mainstream of massage medicine and is particularly effective in treating internal diseases, as described in the Ling Shu.

In ancient times, health experts advocated for regular scalp massage, face massage, eye exercises, nose rubbing, tooth tapping, ear popping, foot rubbing, limb shaking, and abdominal massage as part of a healthy lifestyle. In addition to using hands, other tools such as a hairdryer can be used to apply heat to sore areas instead of using a hot compress. The tip of a ballpoint pen can be used to apply pressure to acupoints, and a golf ball can be rolled under the feet for foot massage. A bristle brush can be used to massage the back and waist. The massage should be stimulating enough to create a slight sense of soreness, softness, and swelling, but not too intense to avoid inflammation. It can be performed anytime, anywhere, and can be done once to three times a day to achieve the goal of health maintenance.

2. Meridian Massage and Weight Loss

Meridian massage for weight loss involves regulating diet and promoting the function of the body's meridians and organs. It is considered one of the most effective and least likely to rebound methods for weight loss. Additionally, it rarely causes loose or sagging skin after weight loss and can also be used for targeted sculpting and body shaping. Therefore, people can confidently use meridian massage for weight loss.

For example, the size of the abdomen is a major indicator of a person's weight. Especially for middle-aged and elderly people with poor endocrine and fat metabolism function, squatting or physical activity can cause shortness of breath. Meridian massage for weight loss can help in such cases.

3. Simple Massage Techniques

1. Scalp Massage

This massage technique stimulates the brain, relieves headaches, prevents dementia in the elderly, and increases brain cell activity. Use the fingertips of both hands, including the thumbs and other four fingers, to press and massage from the hairline to the Feng Chi acupoint at the back of the head. Combing the hair in the same direction with a comb can also be done regularly. Massage the acupoints at the back of the head: Use the thumbs to massage the Feng Chi and Feng Fu acupoints on both sides until a slight soreness and swelling sensation is felt. Hold the neck with the index finger, middle finger, and ring finger, and massage downwards to the shoulders.

2. Eye and Facial Massage

For people who work at close range for long periods of time, this massage can alleviate eye fatigue, prevent visual decline, and reduce the appearance of eye bags. Massage the eye sockets: Use the index finger or middle finger to push the eyebrows from the inner corner to the outer corner, from the Jing Zhu acupoint at the eyebrow head to the Si Zhu Kong acupoint at the eyebrow tail. Then, use the thumbs and index or middle fingers to massage the Jing Ming acupoint inside the eye socket, moving along the upper and lower eye sockets to the Tong Zi Gu acupoint at the end. Repeat this process several times until the entire eye socket feels slightly sore and swollen. Massage the temples and the sides of the nose at the Ying Xiang acupoint. Rub the palms together until warm, place the palms on the forehead, and use slight pressure to rub down to the chin. For those with nasal problems, colds, runny noses, or nasal congestion, the middle finger can be used to rub from the Ying Xiang acupoint up to the root of the nose, repeating this motion about 10 times. The tongue should be pressed against the palate, and the lower teeth should be tapped against the upper teeth continuously about 20 times.

3. Ear Massage

The meridians in the ears are closely related to the internal organs of the body. Massaging the ears can enhance organ functions, prevent hearing loss, and relieve tinnitus. Rub and knead the ears by bending the thumbs and fingertips of both hands and rubbing the ears up and down until they become warm and red.

4. Limb Care Massage

This massage technique enhances the metabolism of the hands and feet, treats muscle soreness, and prevents degeneration of the elbows and knees. Use kneading motions from the shoulders to the arms, massaging acupoints such as Hand San Li, Qu Chi, and Qu Ze. Rub the palms and backs of the hands together until warm. Massage the thighs, knee joints, and gastrocnemius muscles of the lower leg. Press and massage acupoints such as Zu San Li, Yang Ling Quan, and San Yin Jiao in the feet until a slight soreness and swelling sensation is felt. Hold the ankle with one hand and grab the toes with the other hand, rotating the ankle joint 20-30 times. Rub the Yong Quan acupoint on the sole of the foot vigorously to strengthen kidney function and prevent cold feet.

5. Lower Back Care Massage

Make a fist with both hands, use the knuckles of the thumbs to rotate and massage the lower back, and use the palms to apply pressure and rub up and down until the lower back feels warm. Also, perform some bending and rotating movements of the waist.
